This week Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, one of my (and smogquixote's) favourite bands, released Of The Last Human Being, their first album in 17 years. SGM was formed by a group of Jewish classical musicians to play experimental progressive metal on a variety of bizarre home-made instruments. Sounding almost like a metal answer to Henry Cow, their music fuses jazz, folk, modern classical, klezmer and all kinds of other influences, complete with surreal, highly literate lyrics and dadaist sleeve notes. Meanwhile, their stage shows have included puppet shows, comedy performances and academic lectures to create true multimedia experiences. The new LP shows that they are as radical as ever, is a landmark of avant-garde progressive music, and is very likely to remain my album of the year.
