Horses (1975) was a key album
And a great debut. Free Money, Redondo Beach, Gloria etc...
Her unconventional looks, brains, poetry was a beguiling mix
She's still out there now
I saw at a festival about five years ago and she was superb
What's the TP verdict?

Other than a couple of songs on 'Horses', its snoresville USA for me.

Redondo Beach, Land and Elegie.
The rest are pretty rubbish especially Gloria.

Three great tunes there Rogue but.... ....not a fan of Free Money then? Another wonderful tune in my opinion. I love the way it builds up to a frenzy.....
Free Money Penetration cover is pretty good too - though not especially different from Patti's original (though who doesn't love Pauline's voice?)...

So that's a "no" then?
Gots to say I think every track on Horses is a winner
I really like her version of Gloria, and indeed My Generation...

Nope, she has a good voice in parts but prolonged listening is a chore.
She is also absurdly pretentious.

I still think this is as remarkable as when I first heard it in the 70s
The B side to the 1974 single "Hey Joe"
Her against the wheel, me against the wheel. Oh the in-speed-o-slow motion inspection is driving me insane. In steel next to Dot Hook. Shoulder-to-shoulder, both sweatin. But you she got nothin' to hide. And I got somethin' to hide here called desire...."

I tend to agree with Roguey on this one: I think Horses is one of the most overrated albums in the rock canon. I'd say Radio Ethiopia and Easter were far superior LPs – the latter would be consistently excellent if not for "Because The Night" (I seem to have an instinctive dislike of anything created by Bruce Springsteen). I also have rather a soft spot for Smith's later album Dream Of Life. But overall, I view her as something of a poor man's Catherine Ribeiro.

Patti Smith can go in the Sacred Cows thread for me. Never liked her much. I'm with Rogue: over-rated and pretentious.

And Radio Ethiopia and Easter and Wave. Gets a bit average from Dream of Life onwards but Tramping was a roar back to form. And anyone who says 'Fuck You Bono' live at an awards ceremony is always alright with me.
