Nowadays it’s dead easy, you’ve got You tube,Spotify,Bandcamp etc but back in the day you had to rely on reviews in the music press in order to figure out what your next purchase was going to be.I’ve realised I missed out on a lot of good music first time round because some music scribe slagged off some record. It explains why I’ve got a particular single/album,loved it to bits but never bought their next release. That happen to anybody else?Or am I just a tight git who wanted to make sure I was getting my money’s worth.

I certainly used to be guided by music paper reviews when I was a growing up. Usually it worked out okay but I certainly got a fair few bum steers too. Inevitably, when relying on the opinions of critics, I must have missed out on stuff I would have loved and was probably quite easily swayed by positive or negative reviews. I do love being able to go on YouTube and make my own mind up - it removes the magic and anticipation, and devalues music, but I don't end up wasted money like I used to

I lived in a few punk households in the mid to late 80's so there was always loads of new music on the go and we had a few visitors and even some touring bands staying so there was always music being listened to(and not just punk). Also, I rarely bought the music press and read the plethora of fanzines that were around including Maximum Rock'n' Roll. I've always just went ahead and listened to anything. Some good and some bad but hey, that's the way it goes.
