No Upstarts thread yet?
Possibly one of the most important bands to come out of punk.
Unashamedly socialist and anti fascist.
They fucking rocked out too as this classic shows👍

When it comes to the pigs, the Upstarts certainly told it like it is.
My fave by them

Great song and they had it in for the cops but they never bettered this as far as anti police songs go.
Great live album too. One of the best. It's a pity they never used the sax to greater effect on more of their songs.👍

They did so many classics and a lot of them were b-sides!
With it's up front bass and pissed off lyrics how many times did you feel like this as a teenager?

Unashamedly socialist and anti fascist Thanks for setting up the Upstarts thread They were a bit after my time so I never paid em any heed I agree that, based on what I've heard subsequently, they have all the ingredients of a great punk band This one gets me every time... The Murder of Liddle Towers

A later tune which still gets played in their set. Co written by the late Tony Frater of the Cockney Rejects and Red Alert. I put them on a few years back, Mensi is very cautious about his health nowadays, though he does make fun of the fact. Tried to get my landlady girlfriend of the time to 'tuck him in' after the gig.

Aye all that boozing has caught up with him. He's still a fine figure of a man though.🤣
I met him a couple of times in the early 90's but not in any musical capacity.
He's old school Northern English working class which in some ways is a dying breed.
His vocals are still as strong as ever, very distinctive.
Long may he flourish👍

Yeah loved the first three albums and early singles. They certainly hated the fash and the fash hated them so their gigs weren’t always peaceful affairs. What with the gig violence and the vigilante incident it’s no wonder they got dropped by their record label.Came back with a good third album though. Were never the same after Mond left.

...their gigs were notoriously violent here in the South West too, so i steered well clear. The Upstarts are a band i probably appreciate more now, than i did in their early days. I think this is a great fourth album, where they tried to progress...

I would agree with that but if you're an anti fascist you have to stand up and be counted. In some ways the the music reflected that.

For me one of 'the' bands of 76-79. Just dismissed as sub Sham Johnny come latelys unfortunately. I'll never forgot the day on Facebook when Mensi posted a photo of himself backstage after a gig. His mum had died the same day but he'd gone through with it. You could see the pain in his eyes. Also in the photo was someone he'd met for the first time that evening, Liddle Towers daughter. A few favourites:
