Get well soon Mensi!
I'm gonna play me some Upstarts today, I remember taping this when it was broadcast and playing it until the tape was knackered -

My Upstarts story from across the ocean. I was lucky in that my city I lived in had 2 what I guess you could call underground record shops. This was in the 80s for me. Not sure if these 2 shops existed in the 70s. Anyway I forked over a premium for this Upstarts record the name escapes my mind. $19.99 plus tax. Sometimes I could get some Old School American hardcore for under $10 so yah that $19.99 put a dent in the beer and cigarette fund. Now I knew who the Upstarts were before buying this record. Anyway as I pay for the record the shop owner wonât let go of the record. Itâs like he regrets selling to me. Teenager, army jacket, beat up hi top sneakers, etc. He holds on to it and says, âPromise me you will take care of this record. I say I will. He says, No you donât understand. This is going to be a really rare record. Take care of it.â I felt like I bought gold or something. Anyway thatâs my contribution to this Angelic Upstarts thread. A good but not favorite of mine. Also, I wanted to start my own online distro back in the 90s but lacked money, time and computer brains to put together. I was going to name it âLust for Glory.â Take care!

Woke up with a heavy heart this morning thinking about the big fella. Before the gig in Scarborough, whilst the rest of the band were setting up, I had to drive him round Scarborough looking for Gaviscom tablets. We had a great chat on socialism, football (he loved Cloughie) and I embarassingly told him how for a couple of years I thought the opening line to Teenage Warning was: ' You wind me up like a Chocolate Orange.' He told me it had actually ended up with those words in a Smash Hits magazine.

Mensi memorial night marks the end of an era for the Angelic UpstartsMensi would have loved this. A packed out venue full of punk rockers, paying tribute to one of their own and having a a fantastic time. Sadly, he couldnât be here, because he was the subject of this official memorial night, following his untimely death from Covid-19 complications in December. But Iâm certain he was here in spirit, as well as looking down on us from the montage of pictures behind the stage. mensi ipamusic.co.uk/?p=7496&fbclid=IwAR3u8nSmSwwAF9h2DQPqHWi-4-eR2gMBXpd4wthCpkGRvPackRbaD9KbvUsChris Wright and his band Crashed Out opened the Mensi memorial gig.
