The 80s Rockabilly fad broke the continuity of the Teds' movement. They had been going 20+ years and there were families round my way where sons were wearing their fathers' drapes. All of the lads I knew in that 2nd generation of Teds jumped on it cos it made them 'current', but it was just another transient scene, of which there was an abundance at the time and they moved on when the fashion changed. Double edged sword. The Sweet issue of Vive Le Rock had an article on Matchbox I'm sure most of us have vague memories of them Matchbox - Rockabilly rebel 1980Did any young Rockabillys like this I wonder? Just seems total bollocks to me And don't get me started on the Confederate flag

...yes, the Confederate Flag is a bit naff, especially as they come from Middlesex rather than the deep south. I don't mind their music, they had a few minor hits. When i saw The Stray Cats there were: Teddy Boys, Punks, Pop Kids and Skinheads were all bopping having a great time. They captured the imagination of the public the most as we moved into the 80s. But beyond that, Rockabilly (which lead to Psychobilly) was, as Zeo says on the rise throughout the 80s The Cramps and The Meteors became massively popular. I remember the " Smell Of Female" live record being on the Indie charts for most of 1983. Post-Punk kids went from spiking their hair to flat-topping their hair... even yours truly had quite a stylin' flat-top for a large chunk of the 80s. The genres were all merging. You'd see Psychobillys at Sisters Of Mercy, Death Cult, Sex Gang Children, Killing Joke gigs. I guess Kirk Brandon more than any other figure popularised that look.

Gotta confess I had a flat top for a few years in the mid 80s. It was a great look. Needed to be trimmed every 2-3 weeks though.
And who doesn't love The Cramps? No one, that's who
Smell of Female is a wonderful LP - the fake live show format works perfectly. This one goes out to all you Gucci bag carriers out there....
I lived in Portsmouth in 1985 and the pschobilly scene was huge there - the big local group were Emptifish whose gigs were carnage as the Portsmouth FC 6:57 crew would invariably turn up
Brighton's big group were the Long Tall Texans whose gigs were also quite lively
You're quite right Andy, there was plenty of cross-polination back in those days and Kirk Brandon was symbolic of the popularity of the look
You used to see some enormous pointy quiffs on pschobillies back in the day too.

I saw a few bands like King Kurt, Meteors, etc but only cos they happened to be on the bill with other bands I went to see... never took much interest in revivals.
The best of the bunch were the Stray Cats. Setzer could really play.
Like Andy says, the flat top barnet was ubiquitous for a while whatever music you were into. I did the peroxide Kirk look like everyone else.
Klub Foot in Hammersmith was the spot where Psychobilly and proto-goth scenes coalesced, and the Dirt Box parties were fun.

Oh yes I forgot that was your mascara and blusher days 🤣 Nowt wrong with a bit of mascara and blusher Women loved it (Some) Blokes less so - a good way of getting insights into rampant, aggressive homophobia (and running very fast)

Were you another Batcaver Nige?🤩🤣 I went once or twice but I was never a Goth My journey went something like.... Glam -> Punk -> Bowie/Kraftwerk etc + Joy Division/Banshees/Slits/Pop Group etc -> Funk -> Techno -> and beyond But it wasn't linear like that and everything kind of overlapped Never stopped loving Clash, Iggy, Bowie, Pistols, PiL, Reggae, Dub etc Was also frequently travelling backwards to blues, folk, northern soul/Motown, swing, jazz, disco, easy listening, house etc As the old song goes Don't Fence Me In....
