I recall this being something of a fallow period for cool music This is of course the received wisdom that is now treated as gospel but there was still a ridiculous amount of great stuff around Checkout some of the big hit singles just from 1974... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_UK_top-ten_singles_in_1974That list brings it all back... Mud, Showaddywaddy, Rubettes, Paper Lace, ugh

I recall this being something of a fallow period for cool music, falling as it did between the decline of glam and the punk rock explosion, albeit with some notable exceptions, like Cockney Rebel, who seemed to appeal to both the cork sniffers and the more laddish elements This is of course the received wisdom that is now treated as gospel but there was still a ridiculous amount of great stuff around Checkout some of the big hit singles just from 1974... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_UK_top-ten_singles_in_1974Our age group look back with nostalgia though to a big degree, there was also a hell of a lot of dross and novelty stuff around too. Myself I was in flux between glam/prog/pub rock.

Perhaps I'm more in thrall to soul, proto-disco, latter day Glam, and good old bubblegum than most here?
There's always a lot of dross and novelty in any era
Punk docs typically claim it was all Brotherhood of Man and ELP in the mid 70s and that's bollocks. There was still plenty of great stuff to enjoy

One man's dross is another man's nugget! Mud released this self-penned dittie in 1976. To my ears it's a well crafted, well recorded, well played gem!

I always meant to read Will Birch's book on the Pub Rock scene (no sleep til Canvey Island?) but never got round to it and I think copies go quite expensive now.
