Anybody recommend a music recognition app? I've just got a joblot of reggae white label 12 inchers in. They're all in plain sleeves with no information of the artist or title. I've used Shazam and Music Detector apps and they have found the Dennis Brown and Gregory Isaac's ones in the pile but they can't find the others. Some are just dub instrumentals which probably are beyond discovery but it would be great to be able to label the vocal discs.

I just use Siri on my iPhone however I think it’s powered by Shazam which is not so good on the less mainstream stuff. Good luck with the reggae

Yes, how do they recognise the music?

The app itself has a database of hundreds of thousands of songs. When it 'hears' a tune being played to it, the algorithm selects components of the song and cross references it and gives you the answer. For something like the Beatles it can answer in seconds but progressive rock with all the time changes it has to hear nearly all of it.
Tried Soundhound app on the reggae and it gave me an answer for one: Chiney Man by Culture. But it wasn't that at all, same drum and bass pattern but not the vocal.

The recycling of rhythms that is a feature of reggae is always going to confoud that kind of app. They are handy though for more mainstream fare. Often I'll be watching TV or out and about and wonder what's playing and Siri will deliver the answer
