You could say that about anyone with ludicrous levels of wealth Especially if they are posing as icons of the counterculture at the zenith of 60's idealism "Sir" Mick Jagger was never a convincing counterculture icon I always remember his interview on World in Action as an example of his craving to be accepted by the establishment... The closest they came to doing that (under extreme duress) was Altamont and we know how that turned out. You could say that about anyone with ludicrous levels of wealth I think the Stones still do the odd free concert Didn't they do one in Brazil a few years back? I seem to remember over one million people turning up. By coincidence this is getting a release in July 2021 (turns out it was 1.5 million people).... Coming out on July 9th – A Bigger Bang: Live On Copacabana Beach!
Capturing one of the biggest free concerts ever recorded and a critical moment in rock’n’roll history – for the first time you can experience the complete concert film remixed, re-edited and remastered.
In front of 1.5 million people, one of the biggest free concerts in history, The Rolling Stones’ performance on February 18 th 2006 was an historic event; a critical moment in Rock ‘n’ Roll history. As Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and Charlie Watts fire on all pistons from one track to the next, the crowd continues to meet their energy waving Brazilian and British flags while rocking out in the tropical evening sunset. With incredible staging and graphics, this fully restored and remastered concert from their ‘A Bigger Bang’ world tour now includes four previously unreleased tracks; Tumbling Dice, Oh No, Not You Again, This Place is Empty and Sympathy For The Devil.

They didn't start making serious money until they parted ways with Decca (who then flogged their back catalogue to death, Bill, Charlie and Brian Jones estate receiving nowt, Mick and Keith only seeing 6%). Jagger had seen the failure of Beatles' Apple and made sure the Stones own label didn't waste on frivolities.

MY LIFE AS A ROLLING STONE (4 PART SERIES) So far i have watched two of these, with Mick & Keef. REALLY GOOD candid interviews with fantastic archive footage. Back in late 70s, as i was getting into Punk Rock in my teens, it was kind of 'Verboten' to be listening to The Stones... but the older i get, the less i could care less. ...it's astonishing to think they have out lasted pretty much EVERY band out there that formed at the same time as them. Keith comes across as being as bemused by that as anyone else. On the world stage they are still the biggest band on the planet too. The footage of Keith trying to hold back the tears at one of their South American gigs was rather touching. www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/p0cgmxk5/my-life-as-a-rolling-stone-series-1-2-keith-richards

That Guardian piece is ridiculous. There is a footnote where the paper has had to amend two howling errors. Christ!, if you thought four people were killed at Altamont instead of one, you should not be writing articles on the Stones

...also surely, it's rather silly to review just one episode of a four part documentary? They need to be watched as a complete series, before one reaches for the hatchet to trash a band, Stuart Jeffries clearly has little time for or this documentary made about them.

Anyone else miss the days when we didn't know everything about every aspect of bands and "legends"? Before non stop Uncut/Mojo cover stories and endless talking heads documentaries? Fine when done for outsiders like "Lawrence Of Belgravia" as an example, but is there the slightest need for more on the usual suspects?
