Such a great band. Remember a couple of singles as a nipper, but over the last 10/15 years have tracked down vinyl copies of all their albums, plus singles that are exclusive recordings. Here's the chaps grappling with Glam Rock...

The Equals were probably unaware of the popularity of their music in certain markets. Check out the record below by Doris Ang from Singapore: Michael and the Slipper Tree sung in Mandarin. The backing band is great in this version with superb fuzz guitar. The song starts at 8.08. I think you can safely ignore the rest of the record

I only know this top tune as the Business covered it as Viva Bobby Moore.

I'm sure I must have posted my Equals story before, maybe the old site? Late sixties and the boys are at the top of their game but the pressure gets a bit too much for singer Derv Gordon and he develops a few mental health problems. The manager pulls a few strings and gets him to stay in the quiet Fenland village of Littleport to recuperate.
Unfortunately, the local kids on the way to school clock who he is and it ends up with poor old Derv in all his stage gear, singing and dancing in the middle of the street. Manager takes him back to London where its safer.

...not read that story before PU. I think poor Derv came off the worst when they had a car crash too.
I'm sure we all remember this STOMPER, when we were wee kids, right?

Absolute banger Andy
Here's another Equals classic including great period vid from 1969
Interesting how Derv was the vocalist but watch the clip below and you'll notice Eddie Grant stands out with his outrageous (for 1969) bleached barnet and his confidence. The rest of the group look less comfortable than Eddie - no surprise given what happened to him later

ACE... Nigey, not seen that video before ...as i am a bit of a car nerd, i'd guess that was shot in Germany.
Yes, Eddie could probably stop the traffic with a Peroxide Afro back in 1969 ...talking of which, here is some great live footage of The Equals in French TV, with Eddie doing his best 'Hendrix' on the second song.
Derv is still out there doing gigs. I think there is a book on The Equals in the works, written by the guy who now plays guitar for Derv.
