Strange film. Especially coming from the usual "ra-ra USA!" DC / Marvel stable. Grotesque, amoral, and occasionally cringe-y to watch. Joachim Phoenix turns in a superb performance playing a weirdo part-time clown, with Mommy-issues and a tendency to break into inopportune laughing fits. Getting sacked from his job, he is on his way home when he is attacked by some yuppie types on the subway and pulling a gun, he starts on a rampage culminating in a disturbing talk-show appearance (with host Robert De Niro). Watched it a couple of times already. This is not the normal superhero type of film you'd expect. A psycho, anti-hero psychological thriller with some serious blackly-funny moments (celebrating a murder dancing to Gary Glitters' Rock 'n Roll part 2" is a highlight ). One of the best films I've seen in a while, tbh. Recommended.

Thanks for the review Ando
Not seen it yet. I'm normally two years behind current releases. I suspect I'll find lots to enjoy too.

I waited for the hype to reduce before watching it.
In summary, I think it's a worthwhile and entertaining film for which some grossly exaggerated claims have been made.
Does the average American really need to see this film before becoming aware of how dehumanising their society is ?
It was strange to find myself internally cheering at his ultimate undeserved elevation to hero status.
Glad I saw it. Pleased that I didn't have to pay to do so.

It was OK. The hype and debate around it was more interesting. They said no sequel but as it earned a shedload they must be tempted.

I assumed that this film was setting up a movie dealing with Batman's first encounter with Joker. The shedload that Stu refers to will surely lead to either a sequel to "Joker" or a new Batman film involving Joker. It doesn't really matter how the studio describes it, the great effort of establishing Joker's backstory creates too obvious a potential money maker for Hollywood to ignore.

I hate Batman films or anything to do with it...however I've heard that this might be a wee bit different so will approach it with an open mind

I never caught any of the hype for this film, and watched it thinking it would be a standard "Batman" movie. That's what threw me at first, as it was completely different to what I was expecting. It is not a kid's film. -Complete opposite to the standard DC "Avengers" type bullshit.
