What better excuse for a thread about Penetration AND Pauline Murray's solo career than the recent release of ElementalCLICK HERE FOR PAULINE'S WEBSITEAfter a hiatus of 31 years, Pauline Murray recently returned with her third solo album, Elemental
Here's Secrets...
Pauline's voice still sounds great eh?
Anyhow, let's talk Penetration, let's talk Pauline
Penetration were maybe a little under-appreciated and under valued?
Lots of those early songs have stood the test of time
Life's a Gamble (1978) on a German TV show.....

I used to love them, the first band ever to play at the Nottingham Sandpiper December 77. They seemed to drift into standard rock territory and thus I never checked out Invisible Girls etc. Maybe I missed something?

I never checked out Invisible Girls etc. Maybe I missed something? I really like the first Invisible Girls album. Quite different from Penetration but I'm a sucker for Pauline's voice. Produced by Martin Hannett The Dream Sequence single is my favourite tune and gives you a good idea of what to expect...

I'm with PU on this. Most of their stuff up until their 2015 album is pretty good and some of their early stuff are easily some of the best punk records ever released.
However, the Invisible Girls are not an easy listen and I reckon that's partly due to Hannets production which makes(especially the 1st album)sound all a bit too samey, safe and unspectacular for me.
Also the songs don't do Paulines vocals any justice too.
A step backwards in my opinion.

They seemed to drift into standard rock territory IIRC their guitarist went on to join NWOBHM trail blazers Tygers of Pan Tang Notwithstanding they are worth the price of admission for this number alone, one of the most joyous and exhilarating anthems of the 'new wave'

Do you remember Autopunk at the old TP? Very funny guy. He's in Penetration (or was in the 2000s)

I think one of my favourite Penetration records is the semi-bootleg comp Race Against Time, that includes their 1977 Demos on side 1. Great to hear raw unpolished recordings of some of their best known songs. Side 2 is some live tracks from gigs in Newcastle 1978/79 One of the best gigs The Lone Sharks ever played was supporting Penetration in Bristol 2009 at The Junction... for a while, our very own C.B.G.B.'s Truly, we were on fire that night!

Agreed Andy, Race Against Time is a great compilation, also worth seeking out is the Live 1978-1979 2xCD which has a gig from 78 at Thames Poly and the whole of their 79 farewell gig in Newcastle, part of which is on Race Against Time. Both are quality mixing desk recordings. www.discogs.com/Penetration-Live-1978-1979/release/2927283
That gig where you guys supported Penetration was indeed a memorable night. There was also a gig at the Bierkeller in 2003, I think there were probably about fifty people there, Pauline came on and said that she should've held the gig in her front room. They were on fire that night too.
