Yuh, I was too old and disinterested to be necking Es but did enjoy going to the occasional rave and club, and enjoyed some of the music that came out of the era e.g. Stone Roses, Mondays, KLF
There was a real sense of excitement for a couple of years and then it morphed into superclubs and superstar DJs

I liked/still like some dance music from that era in moderation... Leftfield, Prodigy ...especially TripHop Portishead, Massive Attack
This is class too...

Nobody was into bands, it was all about the records and the DJs. The Criminal Justice Bill killed it by forcing it out of the fields and into the clubs.

Other than the sheer self indulgence of going out and chasing women,I thought the whole rave scene was a bit of a fad.
From 89-93 I was at my most politically active so it was a bit of a welcome distraction more than anything else.
Mind you music has never been the prime motivation in my life.

I thought the whole rave scene was a bit of a fad. ...as was the mod, hippie, punk scenes etc, for most people that were in them. For a few it became a way of life.

Better to still feel passionate about the music without trying to look like an eternal teenager
That said, some people seem to be able to pull it off better than others
Other opinions are available

Aye, People who refuse to 'grow up'. You know the types, ancient punks trying to sport mohicans when they have a receding hairlines, trying to squeeze into bondage trousers etc. Embarrassing.

If dressing up makes you happy, go for it, regardless of your age. It's not for me, though.

Album of the day....The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses (1989)
Always a pleasure to listen to this album.
Bizarre how this - a 60s referencing, guitar based LP - came to symbolise an element of rave culture. What is easier to understand is how it became a phenomenon. It’s brilliant and has the lot. Lightning in a bottle! Nagging, insistent, catchy tunes. Wonderful melodies and riffs and a group who are clearly much more than the sum of their parts. It defined that Summer of 1989.
Listening in 2021 it is also a really enduring and timeless record too. Even the weaker tracks still sound anthemic.
It’s one of those albums for which I can sing along pretty much word perfect. We all played it to death when it came out, right? By the time they released Fools Gold it felt as if they could do no wrong. How were we to know then that they could never repeat the trick? (That said, Second Coming has a few great tunes on it (well two, Ten Storey Love Song and Love Spreads)).
I saw them play Ally Pally in November of 1989, around the time Fools Gold was released. It was amazing. The whole crowd were dancing and singing from start to finish. Talk about a celebration of all that is wonderful in the world. Fools Gold was epic.
And I have yet to mention I am the Resurrection. What a song. Absolutely guaranteed to get me dancing like a loon. I Wanna Be Adored, She Bangs The Drums and Waterfall are the other real highlights, but it’s all extremely enjoyable even if the odd track is perhaps a bit filler-ish.
9/10
