Last few days I've been playing Pin UpsIt's an LP that is generally regarded as something of a footnote in DB's career - it's just a load of cover versions, right? I love a cover version and I love this LP All good tunes DB backed by two thirds of the Spiders and, it's a lot of fun What's not to love?

The best covers album ever? Bowie and the band sing and play as if the tunes are their own. I bought it when it first came out and I only knew about half the songs on it, Who, Kinks, Floyd. The opener Rosalyn, though the Pretty Things original rocks, will always for me be a Bowie track. Same with I Wish You Would, an old blues song vamped up by the Yardbirds but Bowie's stamp on it is superior. Worth checking out the Mojos Everythings Alright, toss up on whether David's is better.
There would only be one more rock guitar based album after this and it seems that this was a list of his influences he had to pay credit to before moving onto a new sound.

I had no idea anyone else (let alone someone who really knows their onions) would share my enthusiasm. Heart warming. Thanks PU
And no, did not know that Angus Young's dad was co-writer

Aside from Pinups, Bowie's made some great covers. Let's Spend The Night Together with an added verse even had Jagger admitting the song was bettered. And from Tiny Tim's whimsical Fill Your Heart to Brel's dark Amsterdam, there were few he couldn't stamp his indelible print on.

Back to Pinups - I always rated his version of the Kinks' 'Where Have All The Good Things Gone', but it is such a great song

Looks like I put 2 and 2 together and got five. Actually according to wikipedia, the Young in question is Angus and Malcolm's older brother. Died in 2017

A few other great covers by DB My Death - Jacques Brel / Scott Walker Wild is the Wind - Nina Simone Round and Round - Chuck Berry White Light White Heat + Waiting for The Man - Velvets

Ouch. Yes.
I know Bowie was given the Biff Rose album by Ken Pitt, so it was Biff's version which inspired DB. Bowie's versh is better, though maybe that's because I'm most familiar with it.

Just mulling that the number one tune - Sound & Vision - great though it is, is even the best tune on Low. That would be Always Crashing, Be My Wife, or Warsawa

That 50 has got me wondering about my own
I'm listening to an album a day to create one
Today was Aladdin Sane
I'm going to force rank my favourite tunes from each album in a list, then add them to a master list again ranked with whatever is already on there, and thereby come up with my definitive list of my personal all time best DB tunes in order
So far it looks like...
1. Drive in Saturday 2. Jean Genie 3. Aladdin Sane 4. Lady Grinning Soul 5. Cracked Actor 6. Time
Buddha of Suburbia tomorrow
