Dick Lucas is a top bloke. My band played some shows with his original band The Mental back in the day, and we borrowed their drummer from time to time. Trotsky? Still in the band but lives in Germany I believe.

When the Mental split Dick joined forces with a West Country (Warminster?) band called the Stupid Humans. Andy LS will prolly know more details cos they were from round his way.

Aye thats probably right. The Mental were around 1979 if I remember rightly. I bought my first EP from Bluurg in 1980 and I inerviewed them for my fanzine back in the 80's too. Saw them quite a few times back then too(and Culture Shock)and also with Toxic Reasons who blew the off the stage in 83..no mean feat.

Their self-pressed 45 changes hands for good money these days, apparently. I recall their drummer had a pile of unsold copies under his bed back in the day.... another missed investment opportunity

Dick was a public school boy?
Didn't know that. Not that it matters if he was. He's a really clever lyricist.
Their bass player Grant is one helluva musician and I saw them quite a few times back in the day and as I said firstly with Toxic Reasons who aptly played a song called 'Destroyer'which fucking blew me away.
What an experience!

Aye, no luck.
Look what happens to people who go to these boarding schools?
You either end up like Dick or Boris Johnston.

The school was Lord Wandsworth College. Dick and Tony both very clever guys, Tony got four As in his A levels despite getting booted out of our 6th form college in The Great Punk Purge of 1981, four months before exams...I only just scraped through. Zeo fared a bit better than me!

I had the joy of being the promoter and TM of their Australian tour in 2012. None of us had really changed since the Mental days of underage drinking at The Fighting Cocks in Winchester and the famous episode running away from hells angels at Stonehenge. The stories I could tell..but what happens on tour stays on tour!

Zeo fared a bit better than me! I got booted out in the final term but I was allowed to sit my A levels. Fothergill (deputy head) told me it was a waste of time cos I'd fail. I got 4, and waved my results in his stupid face Minx said: "Was that when you were in The Iritations?"Yep... we occasionally practised in Tony's garage.
