I remember listening to the 12" Typical Girls when it was released at a mates one school dinnertime and loving it, I went on to enjoy Cut and the bootleg Typical Girls Live in Cincinnati and San Francisco and still listen to them regularly, though I can't get into second LP Return of The Giant Slits, even though I enjoy some of the songs from it on the aforementioned live bootleg. Eventually got to see them them play in Cardiff in 2009 and a bloody good night it was too. One of those 'big grin' evenings. Also saw Viv a couple of times doing her solo stuff in recent years, very enjoyable, as are her books. Speaking of which - www.theguardian.com/music/2020/sep/01/viv-albertine-memoirs-to-be-adapted-for-tv

Aye, the Viv Albertine TV series looks good but will probably be rubbish?
Whatever next a GG Allin comedy biography?

Some people consider The Slits to be the "punkest" of all punk bands. They genuinely couldn't play when they formed, were all female (obviously) during a time when Women In Rock were still considered oddities or groupies. The breaking of that particular stereotype is one of punk's lasting achievements. Sure, they had the advantage of Lydon's relationship with Ari's mum and the friendship and support of The Clash, but they would've been impossible to ignore regardless of that. Unfortunately, I never saw them live and, in fact, didn't really start to appreciate them until years after the band ceased to exist. Typical me My favourite Slits story is that in their early days they used to chant "1, 2 , 3, 4" at the start of every song (regardless of the actual tempo of the song) because they thought that's what all bands did.

...Welcome back Bassy! Yeah, The Slits were unique and threw away the Rock'n'Roll rule book. Last time i was talking to firends locally about them and they reckoned compared to the early Peel Sessions 'Cut' was a disappointment. I beg to differ. I think it's amazing!

Yeah, a lot of people prefer the Peel sessions I don't agree either Dennis Bovell did an amazing job with Cut Still one of my all time favourite LPs

Other than a couple of songs on 'Cut' I don't really enjoy their music.
However, as a band their influence cannot be underestimated and gave women involved in punk an alternative to just 'being seen and/or ignored' at punk gigs as mere fashion jewellery to men.

I've just started Typical Girls?: The Story of the Slits by Zoƫ Street Howe Pretty good so far, although she was not around at the time so a few annoying factual errors
Nowhere near as good as Viv's books though

...there is a glaring omission in that Top 10, young Nigel Ari's vocals on this are fabulous Good point Andy You'll find no argument from me about Animal Space That chart was the aggregate chart from all the TPers who paricipated. That said I don't think I put it in my six. What do you think of the rest of...? Return of the Giant SlitsI must admit I was a bit disappointed, especially after the all round awesomeness of Cut Great lead off single though... The Slits - Earthbeat
