There was also Hot Hits on the MFP label, girls on the sleeve usually in bikinis. Same malarkey, session guys and gals covering Top 30 singles. Some of the songs come off as yer local bash 'em out pub band, it's where they try something leftfield and falls spectacularly on their faces. Had one in once, can't remember if TOTP or HH, and they have a stab at Curved Air's Back Street Luv. Whereas the original starts with this brilliant, flanged electric violin string scrape, the cover sounds like a fart in the bath.
Some are collectable apparently. Elton John used to adopt a cod yank accent to earn a crust in his early career.

I read Elton's new biography which is surprisingly good Turns out he enjoyed knocking out those albums with other session musicians so much that he did one after he achieved his initial success Back to the TOTP albums I believe that when the manufacturers discovered the BBC had not trademarked Top of the Pops they nipped in grabbed the trademark even though they had nothing to do with the programme The sleeve notes on Volume 27 are great... We are proud to present this, the twenty-seventh volume of “TOP OF THE POPS” consistently the best selling album of its kind in recording history.
Without massive T.V., press or radio advertising, this budget L.P. keeps at the top on its own merits, for pop fans throughout the world recognise good pop music, good orchestrations, good vocalists and good value wherever it may be.
This album, recorded specially by us in London is a humdinger. It’s a meaty, beaty, swinging, ring-a-dinging, hopping, popping selection of all that’s best in to-day’s charts; and don’t just believe us - try it for yourselves.
If you’ve a party, a celebration of any kind; or for no reason at all, this is the album to get you way, way up on top of the world.
Please believe us.The winning phrase "meaty, beaty, swinging, ring-a-dinging, hopping, popping selection of all that’s best in to-day’s charts" somewhat undermined by the final plea "Please believe us"Please

Python Lee Jackson's In A Broken Dream has one of the greatest guitar solos ever and Alice's Elected is on there as well. Hopefully, nobody's ever uploaded these covers on Youtube.

I have some similar 'soundalike' records. I do not think they are all bad and sometimes the versions are significantly different, and not just because the bands are incompetent.
I don't think I have any of the Top of the Pops albums, but I did find the cover of one of them in a second hand store. I thought it was so outrageous I would have bought it even though the record was missing. In the event they gave to me for free. I have it stuck up on the inner door of my record cupboard
This one.
