Subs sack drummer over David Amess comment.
Alvin Gibbs statement It gives me no pleasure to announce that following his post seemingly celebrating the tragic and abhorrent death of Conservative MP, David Amess, by the hands of a terrorist, Charlie Harper, Steve Straughan and I have decided Jamie Oliver will no longer continue as drummer for the UK Subs. Jamie has already been informed of this and completely understands why it's necessary. Today we discussed Jamie’s rationalisation for his post as a tasteless joke at length and jointly concluded it’s simply not viable enough an excuse for us to continue to work with him. I put up a post yesterday offering what he told me was his motivation for the things he wrote, which I believe is a genuine if extremely misguided attempt at satire; but as some of you commented thereafter, it is simply not good enough. Jamie has been a stalwart of the UK Subs for many years now, a major figure in the band. He is one of the finest drummers in the world and his playing and musical input will be greatly missed. It’s sad that things have come to this but we must all take responsibility for our words as well as our actions. The UK Subs will fulfil all future gig and touring commitments with a replacement drummer. A

Sounds like he said something stupid and in bad taste without thinking and should have been sorted out by posting an apology and maybe a donation to a dogs charity or something in Mr. Amess' honour. Just seems that everyone is terrified of not being seen to do the right thing these days. What good these knee jerk reactions do other than make those involved look like good guys is beyond me. Punk never used to give a shit about how it looked to the wider world, guess those days are long gone.

I think the main worry from the other three members Doug, is that their gigs would attract the odd right wing nutter seeing Jamie as a legitimate target. Also, a lot of promoters would be wary of that possible occurrence, having to employ extra security.

I have no idea what he posted but the statement suggests it was celebratory. That’s plain wrong.
Not saying he should be sacked or anything but really, what was he thinking? Is he actually happy that a fellow human being has died a horrible and senseless death?

For me ...there's no point in saying about the way Punk used to be, and what you could say 'back in the day' - Social Media and the trolls that feed off it, have completely changed everything now. What you might have said on stage, or even in a music paper interview in previous decades that was considered outrageous, still wouldn't create the kind of manic feeding frenzy of endless stupid bloody opinionated vitriol that the rest of the band are probably dealing with right now. UK SUBS have been here before, when there was a right hooharr about a them booked to play a gig, with a band who has one member that had dubious right wing connections.

The gig with a right wing band was at the Witchwood in Ashton under Lyne. I was stood outside while they were playing and heard them but never actually saw them.

Also, a lot of promoters would be wary of that possible occurrence, having to employ extra security. Notwithstanding the possibility of Harper having his Zimmer frame kicked out from under him by an angry bonehead in some toilet circuit venue, they did the right thing. If conservatives are expected (rightly so, IMO) to mind their P's and Q's in the name of political correctness, the least the left can do is show some respect for human life.

'toilet circuit venue'
I aspire to put on gigs in a venue with working conveniences.
