For me ...there's no point in saying about the way Punk used to be, and what you could say 'back in the day' - Social Media and the trolls that feed off it, have completely changed everything now. What you might have said on stage, or even in a music paper interview in previous decades that was considered outrageous, still wouldn't create the kind of manic feeding frenzy of endless stupid bloody opinionated vitriol that the rest of the band are probably dealing with right now. UK SUBS have been here before, when there was a right hooharr about a them booked to play a gig, with a band who has one member that had dubious right wing connections. Agreed. I think Alvin Gibbs is a bit of a naive spokesman for the Subs and reading his autobiography just confirms it. Whilst I understand Harper taking a backseat and not wanting to be a target at his ripe old age it's ironic that Jamie Oliver's statement seems to have been more outrageous to the Subs own audience than the State and the cops! Just another reason why the Subs should just do the decent thing and disband.đ

Does "giving in" to to that "manic feeding frenzy" by self censoring or knee jerk responses get us anywhere though, to a degree, punk was about saying fuck what everyone else thought. You can vilify us, you can beat us up in the street but we won't be told what to do or say. I think the guy was obviously an idiot for doing what he did, but freedom to say what you like and "hang yourself" with your own idiocy was something hard won, and to throw it away out of fear of what people on social media may say or do is a mistake IMHO. We are heading towards a ridiculously sanitised and self censored world out of fear of a mob and that is wrong, social media is taking us down a very dangerous road.

...we've been going down that path for a longtime. The amount of mis-information that's actually just opinion, often with a hidden agenda, on the internet, is staggering. Here's what Mr Bowie had to say about the internet over 20 years ago...
In the case of the UK SUBS parting company with Jamie, none of us really know the full picture... i was merely pointing out how much has changed since Charlie and the boys hit their first barre chord. They are going to get/have got a backlash, whatever they do. Some would say it was a bold, brave and right decision to part company with him.

As far as I can see, apart from the medium of communication, very little has changed since the punx got attacked as a result of being vilified in the tabloids.

Yes ...but the difference being, that on social media, you've got hundreds/thousands of people piling in on one person (or a small group) it's like watching a small snow ball roll down a mountain side and by the time it gets to the bottom, there's been an Avalanche!

^^ I'm just reading about the Reformation / counter-reformation and the burning of 'heretics', no different from today apart from the pace and scale enabled by technology.
A few years from now it'll prolly be cybernetic implants in your brain and half the world screaming vitriol in your head as soon as you put a foot 'wrong'.

The Subs have doing acoustic numbers which doesn't really enamour me but it's a good album still.

...as mentioned on the Outcasts thread, this gig began and ended very early which meant some people missed seeing them. The Exchange had filled up alot by the time the SUBS were on, but not as many people as their gig previous Bristol gig a few months back, playing songs from Brand New Age, which was rammed. Maybe they tour too much? ...but they seemed to be having fun onstage as well - Alvin and Charlie making jokes to each other about trying to remember the songs from Diminished Responsibility and Endangered Species. The set included: You Don't Belong, Confrontation, Party In Paris, Endangered Species, Down On The Farm... and to finish off, some of their 'greatest hits' Emotional Blackmail, Kicks, Tomorrows Girls, C.I.D., Disease, Stranglehold
