I was over Australia way when Cold Chisel's singer Jimmy Barnes went solo. Distinctive voice but the material was very generic rock. This was CCs finest moment imo.

Mainstream and generic, as you say, but that song is good. I also appreciate Breakfast At Sweethearts, but mainly because I know the place they are singing about and the lyrics paint the picture pretty well

Amazing that both Etta James and Link Wray both played at Dingwalls, which was a small place. I'd love to have seen them both but it would never have occurred to me back then to go to either You should have went. Here's a clip of Etta singing live in 1982. With a voice like that, she would've torn Dingwalls apart!

Henry Priestman has posted this. He can't recall Simple Minds playing at the circled gig but he can't recall who replaced them. I was there and I'm damn sure it was The Favourites taking their place. Look over to the left at the Marquee listings and spot The Invaders, an early incarnation of Madness. That band Supercharge are mentioned again, the ubiquitous Chelsea and a little known Iron Maiden supporting Angelwitch (who?).

Is that page from 1978 PU?
I can't get the timeline clear
I saw Madness in 1979 at the Dublin Castle (a tiny venue) so guessing this must be 1978 if it is Madness playing as The Invaders (though amazed they were big enough to headline the Marquee at this point)
But were The Good Missionaries going in 1978? Surely not? 1979 at the earliest I'd guess. See also The Specials and co at Hammersmith Palais which was a fairly big old place
I think it's a different Invaders and this is Summer 1979 which also accounts for it all being a bit underwhelming as punk was fizzling out but Two Tone and other post punk fun hadn't really kicked in yet

It's 79, the first year I started doing the Sunday Lyceum gigs. Another Invaders? Maybe but never heard of two bands with that moniker. Not long after that Squeeze gig, Madness using their new name supported The Pretenders. Massive crowd of rude boys and they blew Chrissie off stage, so Invaders or Madness, they were a very well established draw in the capital.

Thanks PU Perhaps it was Madness then though the Dublin Castle was/is not a big place. Possibly holding 200? Those Sunday nights at the Lyceum were great

I assume the listing for 'Simply Minds' at The Marquee is a typo. I started going to the Sunday night Lyceum gigs as a 16 year old, with mates, travelling an hour on the train from the Surrey/Hants border. We often faced abuse from squaddies as Aldershot was one of the stops and late Sunday was the time they were returning to barracks after the weekend away. I came across this site for the Lyceum. Not comprehensive but it does trigger one or two recollections. I think my first gig was The Damned/Black Flag/ANL in early Dec '81. www.concertarchives.org/venues/lyceum-theatre--2?page=3#concert-table

Thanks Wardance, a real list of memories there. Though it does muddy the waters of my brain as the Madness/Pretenders gig is before Squeeze/Yachts/ Simple Minds. Unless Madness were trading under two names, who were the other Invaders? No mention of any other band with that name on the internet apart from some 60s US garage band who disbanded in 1970. Maybe a few gigs missing from the list, can't see Nina Hagen who I remember vividly, also Angelic Upstarts, big fight outside after and no mention of the Pack who I remember seeing. One abiding memory is when we got the dates wrong and ended up seeing Samson, Girlschool and Wild Horses. Managed the first two, Bruce Dickinson natural showman and Girlschool were great fun, headliners Wild Horses were a bridge too far though, managed two numbers and split.

Fascinating stuff.
Discogs lists at least eleven bands named Invaders. This crew released a single in 1979 produced by none other than Jimmy Pursey

Can't remember that Invaders at all, part of the very short lived power pop scene maybe? Not bad but would they have been big enough to warrant a headline spot at the Marquee? Hmm, while the rest of the world is grappling with Putin, Gaza etc, I need to know who played where 45 years ago, sad.

I feel exactly the same PU. We need to sort this out. Dammit, this stuff is important. The more I think about it, the more I am convinced that I saw Madness at the Dublin Castle in the summer of 1979, so I feel confident that they were no longer the Invaders at the time of the gig in the listing. Wikipedia confirms that they played at the Dublin castle in 1979. it was a residency. It’s also the place where they made their name. I can’t imagine that they were still playing as the Invaders in August 1979. But as you point out, would the other Invaders have been big enough to headline at the Marquee? Then again, if they found a label to release their single perhaps they were funded by the label to do a short promotional tour? Here’s the discogs page…. www.discogs.com/artist/447277-The-Invaders-2Turns out they had a couple of singles in 1979, and an album in 1980. They were signed to Polydor records so probably did have a bit of a promotional budget.
