Played the album, it's pretty good, lots of energy.
I don't think the two songs we already know are the best at all.

it's a less scathing review than i was expecting, especially as it got pulled from the site.
Ged makes some valid (and amusing) points, but i had a quick listen to samples of the songs on the new album.
At first listen it sounds like quite a varied collection of songs... some 'growers' perhaps that will take a couple of listens.
A Buzzcocks album without Pete's contribution is going to feel a bit odd, but i am prepared to listen without prejudice.
Ged comes across as one of these people who only think of Buzzcocks in terms of his nostalgic teenage memories of the late 70s and, as has been demonstrated on this thread, there are a myriad of great songs Steve has written since the band reformed.

In fairness Ged does mention some of Steve's good songs in that review
One thing he mentions, which has always bothered me too, is Steve's rock god persona and posturing
I was backstage at a Brighton gig about 15 years ago and I can tell you it's no different behind the scenes, if anything it's a bit worse
Maybe he's changed since then but I'm not a fan of any macho bollocks especially when it seems so at odds with a group's history and values. Pete was the antithesis of that

It’s not often that LTW will publish a review that is ‘not positive’. We love music and want to encourage sales and gig attendances.
Pathetic. If I recall rightly Mr Babey had a go at me on the old site for posting a certain Anti Nowhere League song. Also pathetic.

Some thoughts i posted on my Farcebook page about the new album earlier this week...
BUZZCOCKS - SONICS IN THE SOUL LP
Arrived today at ‘ALS’ Mansions, the new Buzzcocks album… or for the ‘Diggle Haters’ …his new solo album/Flag Of Convenience Mk2. I realise for some folks this album being released under the name Buzzcocks is akin to gobbing in the Pope’s face and then kneeing him in the nadgers… but Pete’s gone and apparently, before he departed this earth, told Steve that he wanted to quit and for him to carry on without him. Just played the album through for the first time, so maybe some songs will grow on me, and others perhaps will not, but there are one or two i like already.
Is it as good as any previous Buzzcocks albums? (there have now been ten)
Maybe… not everything Pete Shelley wrote was etched out of solid gold and like any writer he had his dry spells.

No… of course not, i’m sure even Steve would admit that.
Like any veteran Buzzers fan, i miss Pete’s contributions as much as anyone else, but i am prepared to give this album time to soak up rather than just dismiss it outright.
UPDATE ...unlike Ged, i don't hate the song 'Manchester Rain' ...sounds good to me, very catchy ...so i don't really get why it deserves such an extreme dissing.
Yeah, Steve's vocals have changed, maybe due to years of over indulging in certain substances? ...but not to the point where it spoils the songs.
The lyrics perhaps lack the wit of Pete's best, but nothing to get too uptight about... be yeah, some are better than others.
