Brian May should be running the country. He does seem like a decent, grounded, compassionate human being So, yeah, I'm with you there PU Brian May for PM Plus he was Poly Styrene's Maths teacher - and she liked him - which counts for a lot How many teachers did we like when we were growing up? One, two at a push? Meanwhile here's another X Ray Spex classic... X-Ray Spex - Warrior In Woolworths

Now that libraries are open again (for now anyway), I've been getting books out again My last visit yielded this... Anyone else read it? It's written by Poly's daughter Celeste and music writer Zoe Howe It's another oral history ('Please Kill Me' really kick started a trend didn't it?) It's also A4 size and contains lots of lovely photos and other ephemera I'm only a few pages in but have already read about Poly/Mari's dysfunctional family history I get the impression it's more about Poly than X Ray Spex I'll keep you posted I'm nearly halfway through now It's wonderful Much better than I was expecting. The different voices, often contradictory, help to arrive at some kind of truth and honesty. Poly really was a one off, and a lot of the themes she was writing about in the 70s feel very prescient in hindsight

I've mentioned before on this site that I was 12 in August 1977 and my preference at that tender age was for the more melodic, accessible punk bands. This definitely included X Ray Spex.
Poly's lyrics intrigued me and I'd wander around singing my interpretation of the words to "The day the world turned dayglo" and "Germ free adolescence".
I still remember seeing them perform the latter song on TOTP, with Poly wearing that bright red tunic.

Poly's 1980 solo album Transluscence was quite a departure....

Thanks Stu Should be an interesting watch Following our 4CD / 90 track set exploring the work of female artists in the decade following the punk explosion, we invited journalist Lucy O’Brien (who also wrote the liner notes), Cosey Fanni Tutti, Lora Logic, Gina Birch (The Raincoats) and Tracy Tracy (The Primitives) to a roundtable discussion via Zoom to talk about their experience of those times and how their work then has informed their work now.

Probably the only first generation punk band to use brass from the beginning? The Saints used brass on their second album, but it was always part of the X-Ray Spex sound. Just one of a number of things that made the band unique
