No punk forum can be complete without a celebration of... X Ray Spex
Formed in late 1976 by Poly Styrene and Stuart Falcon, X Ray Spex appeared on the live Roxy album with their iconic rallying cry
....Oh Bondage Up Yours
Some people think little girls should be seen and not heard....
That was also their debut single and one which heralded a run of superb singles
I saw them at the Marquee in late 77 or early 78 - it was one of the first gigs I ever went to and they were wonderful

Marianne Joan Elliott-Said was such a great talent. I must confess i cried the day she died. It was so bloody tragic as she was busy again with a new solo album when the cancer struck. X-Ray Spex were one of only 4 punk bands that John Lydon would admit to liking... and contrary to what most people say, they DID finally elease a second album. (1995)

I've never heard that second album Andy
Is it worth seeking out?
I found three of the songs on one YouTube video which suggest the sound was a bit more sedate than in the 70s...
X Ray Spex - Cigarettes / Junk food junkies / Crystal clear

I Am a Cliché is a wonderful Spex song
There's a few I'd rate even higher though so, without any fanfare, here's my very off-the-cuff top ten which goes something like...
1. Identity 2. Oh Bondage! Up Yours! 3. The Day the World Turned Daglo 4. I am a Poseur 5. Art-I-Ficial 6. Germ Free Adolescents 7. I Live Off You 8. Genetic Engineering 9. Obsessed With You 10. Let's Submerge
Identity
Polly was amazing though eh?
The true punk spirit
Invented her own look, sound and style and didn't copy what she saw others doing

...i think that second album is well worth having Nigey. Hard and expensive to find now though. it's been out of print for over 25 years Yes, it's not as hard rockin' as the classic first album, but still great songs. I like her last solo album too

I like 'I'm a Cliche' the most cos it's got probably one of the fastest sax solo's in punk.😎 Great lyrics obviously too.

Now that libraries are open again (for now anyway), I've been getting books out again My last visit yielded this... Anyone else read it? It's written by Poly's daughter Celeste and music writer Zoe Howe It's another oral history ('Please Kill Me' really kick started a trend didn't it?) It's also A4 size and contains lots of lovely photos and other ephemera I'm only a few pages in but have already read about Poly/Mari's dysfunctional family history I get the impression it's more about Poly than X Ray Spex I'll keep you posted

...i had a quick look through that book in Waterstones when it was first published Nigey. It looks fabulous... her daughter clearly put alot of love into making it, but i decided to pass on purchasing it.
I have a tonnage of books and am seriously running out of space.

It's also quite expensive but it looks good.
Nige must have some library if you can get that by the way as the best mine can come up with are a dozen of so Louis L'Amour cowboy books...

Yeah we’re very lucky that the council here still prioritise libraries and so the stock is up to date and varied.
I love libraries
Read a bit more of Dayglo earlier
Top triv: Brian May of Queen was Poly’s Maths teacher at Stockwell Manor School 🤠
Poly really liked him and they always got on well, even years later

Whatever you think of Queen that's a great accolade coming from the Exalted Permed one.
