Without knowing her, it's hard to say. But the pressure of being in the band, touring, promoting, recording etc, must have been immense. The Music 'Biz' and all that goes with it, is no place for someone with mental health issues and back then they didn't really understanding what being Bipolar is. She clearly loved making music though.

I think people like Richie from the Manics and possibly many others thought becoming a successful musician would cure all their problems. I've no doubt that Poly and Syd Barrett were just too sensitive for life and burned out. As someone with experience of this I can tell you it's very hard to find a way back.

Think its a bit of a double edged sword. A lot of people who have mental health issues are creative.
It should all be put in perspective.
Everyone suffers from mental health issues of one sort or another.
The sooner this is recognised the sooner we'll be able to treat them effectively.

I thought it was a good balance of her life story and the short history of X-Ray Spex and what she did after they split up. I didn't know that her first solo album 'Translucence' got such a critical battering. i don't have that, but i do have this second Spex album

Translucence got panned cos it wasn't X Ray Spex, I bought it back then and must admit I was very disappointed. However, a copy came in some years back and listening to it now isolated from the punk years, it's a pleasant listen, sort of Tyrannosaurus Rex with a reggae lilt. There's a few guest spots on other people's albums during her Krishna phase. This reworking of a Lennon tune has her supplying an intriguing mantra.

That is unusual and intriguing Got to say, and based on what I've heard, my enthusiasm pretty much starts and ends with the wonderful X Ray Spex

More on the story here from the Hastings & St Leonards Observer.... Blue plaque unveiled at St Leonards to commemmorate punk rock legend Poly StyreneSaturday, 3rd July saw the unveiling of a Blue Plaque on the former home of punk rock and feminist icon Poly Styrene in North Street, St Leonards On Sea.Read all about it.... The blue plaque on Poly Styrene’s former home is the first in a campaign by 1066 Music Blue Plaques to celebrate & commemorate the lives of local musicians, and lost music venues in the Hastings area.
The group raised the money for the Poly Styrene’s blue plaque via a Crowdfunder appeal.
The appeal was so successful that the money needed was raised within five hours of the launch.
Although initially asking for only £500, the appeal finally raised £760, which enabled 1066 Music Blue Plaques to donate £350 to St Michael’s Hospice, a cheque for which was presented to James Beeching from St Michael’s Hospice at the unveiling ceremony.

This is a great B-side by 'Da Spex' that was easily good enough to have been included on their classic first album...
