I am 62 years old, and apart from the odd course of antibiotics, I have never had to take medication on an ongoing basis. I went for a check up this morning and as a result was put on blood pressure pills. I have to take one every day. Every day for the rest of my life. I know lots of people take pills every day, but it makes me feel very old. On the other hand, I know lots of people who are already dead, and I am not ready for that yet.

Sorry to read that jsm
Is medication the only way to reduce blood pressure?
So far, and at 61, no medication but it's probably only a matter of time

Thanks for that link. I have had several high readings over the last few years and a family history of dropping dead with a heart attack.
And I already have a good lifestyle, diet and exercise wise, so can't do too much there.
One pill, okay, but I know people who take bucket loads of pills everyday, and I do not want to go there

I'm 62 and on no prescribed medication. I was told I had high blood pressure ten years ago, this was due to my divorce and I refused the offer of pills. I brought the reading down with CBD, exercise and cutting out a lot of salt (I used to binge eat crisps as a coping mechanism for marriage breakup). Whether this new regime worked or the passage of time cured my mental stress, I dunno but apart from natural sixty something aches and pains, I feel pretty decent now.
Some people think alternative therapies are made up by quacks but could be worth a five minute Google, JSM.

I'm 52 and I take daily meds for anxiety and high cholesterol. It's all part of the deal, I suppose.

We'll be kept going longer by medicine as we get older, if we have the good sense to visit a doctor.

Swap the 'D' in the initial of this tune with an 'M' for the way forward

Anyone on Statins?
I get consistently high cholesterol readings despite doing everything I possibly can to eat healthy and exercise regularly etc
I conclude it must be genetic and therefore statins make perfect sense, and yet I'd prefer not to have to go on them.
All my research suggests the risks are low but I never even take a paracetamol or whatever so it all feels weird and alien
I have a discussion with the surgery tomorrow and know they'll suggest statins

Doctors prescribe them like Smarties. My Dad's on them and initially they caused him to collapse on a couple of occasions until they got the required strength right.
My (unsubstantiated) theory is modern medicine is just big pharma cash in. Remember before the collapse of the NHS, when you go and see the Doc, have a long chat about lifestyle changes, tablets would be the last thing mentioned. Now, it's in for a minute and out the door with a prescription for the chemists. One of my sisters is a doctor and she's useless in my opinion. Stand your ground with them LE.

Thanks PU - that's my position too
What gives me pause for thought is that Cholesterol and heart attacks are inextricably linked and if I can't get my cholesterol down through diet and lifestyle then I'm at high risk of dying prematurely from a heart attack, or suffering from a stroke and all that involves.
I think I'll have one last go at reducing it through diet etc (though I don't see there's that much more I can do that I'm not already doing)....
...totally plant based, no processed stuff, off the booze, running regulary, walking loads, bit of weights and stretching, 8 hours sleep a night, yada yada

It's a bit of a lottery and the odds get shorter as you get older. At some point most of us will be taking medication to prolong our lives. Better than dying.

Sorry to hear about your Mum Zeo
I’m trying Statins for 3 months to see how I get on
No adverse reaction so far
I’m getting my blood tested in July to see what it doses to my cholesterol levels (ldl). Hopefully it’ll all be very positive
I’ll report back

^ How did it go with the statins LE?
I was on BP meds for about 6 weeks after a series of high readings. The dr. also recommended statins.
The dr. recently gave me the nod for coming off the meds as I got my BP and cholesterol under control with lifestyle changes including cutting out booze and salt, changing my diet, a rigorous exercise routine and yoga / meditation.
It was hard work but I'd rather put off being on meds as long as possible.
