Devo-Gates of Steel. Surely the best Devo song ever? Rogue's post in the "All time greatest punk songs" discussion prompted this dedicated thread about Akron's finest Are they punk? I'd say probably not Formed in 1973 but only really gaining traction in March 1977 when they released their first single "Mongoloid" backed with "Jocko Homo" I remember Rough Trade had sprayed a white bedsheet with.... Q: Are We Not Men? A: We are Devo! ...and hung it on their tiny wall That was enough to prompt me to buy a copy It was love at first listen
What's the TP verdict?
I saw them play in June 2007 when they played.... That's Good Going Under Peek-a-Boo Girl U Want Whip It Secret Agent Man (I Can't Get No) Satisfaction Uncontrollable Urge Mongoloid Blockhead Jocko Homo Smart Patrol/Mr. DNA Gates of Steel DEVO Corporate Anthem Freedom of Choice Wiggly World Gut Feeling (Slap Your Mammy) Beautiful World

DEVO were a ground breaking band. I saw the video for Jocko Homo on the Old Grey Whistle Test in early 1977 and it was the talk of School for the rest of that week. I was too young to really understand what they meant by DE-EVOLUTION... but i sure get it now.
Their last album "Something For Everybody" was something of a return to form after some rather bland studio albums in the 80s/90s.

The first 3 albums were bloody brilliant but I have a soft spot for 'Freedom of Choice . I reckon it's one of the iconic covers of the 80's.
Were they punk? For me they definitely were but they were beyond punk too.
They were far more original than a lot of bands that came out the punk scene.
They just take me back to that time where originality was the motivation.
And they were one of the most original bands of the late 70's/early 80's par se.

Yes, i think their songwriting reached a peak with 'Freedom Of Choice' no wonder they had a smash hit with 'Whip it' Their next album 'New Traditionalists' was something of a disappointment by comparison. When i bought my copy of 'Freedom Of Choice' in 1980 it came with a free promo poster that has survived.

Great poster Andy
I agree with everything that has been written so far
Plus, of course, they were one of the first "new wave" groups to break through in America

I had around a dozen of the album covers too as the guy who used to run the local record shop used to give away his point of sale to the local kids. I also got a lot of the Swindle POS too like posters and album covers which I wished I kept. It would have been around 1980 but when you're a young lad you never think that far ahead🤨

...yes, we didn't realise the records, magazines and fanzines we were buying would be of such value and importance in decades to come.
I am glad i have hung onto alot of stuff though, as just recently it's come to great use for two books. One on The Screaming Dead another on The Misfits Photos, letters, fanzines, Mail outs, badges, shirts... somehow they survived, despite me moving around the West Country quite a bit.

Aye, who'd have thunk they'd be an internet in 40 years?😂 Where I came from people were lucky if they had electricity or a telly🤨 I've still got a lot of stuff but I lost/ gave away/didn't give a fuck about a lot over the last 4 decades or so. However, I've a lot of memories and the germination of a book has been on the cards, whether anything comes of it is anyone's guess however.

Here's another song i like from DEVO's last album. Satirical social commentary to the fore here...

Before record labels 'came a knocking' DEVO recorded a ton of lo-fi demos - these were much later compiled into the albums and officially released as 'Hardcore Devo' Volumes one and two. Many of the songs ended up being rerecorded in sessions for their first two albums... but plenty more are only to be found on these early demos...

Really cool that they even exist to this day! Thanks to Andy's helpful advice a while back I got hold of these demos Gotta add to the chorus of acclaim - love them
