Bad news up here in Scarborough, the controlling Sheffield consortium have mothballed both the Spa venue and the Whitby Pavillion till at least April 1st. Staff lay offs may mean beyond that date. The Vibe club was in financial difficulty before lockdown, cant see them coming back. The Corporation Club that I used has fallen into such disrepair that promoters won't put their names to it. Aside from small venue pubs that just leaves the YMCA theatre, who won't touch anything spiky.
Just heard from a Hull promoter that both the Welly and Polar have closed for good and the news isn't good up in Middlesbrough either. York venues are tight lipped on the situation but the Fulford Arms although they booked good names (Subs, Sham etc) is a tiny place that packed em in like sardines, so that's not going to happen.
What's it like your way? Any gone? Any saying they can ride it out?
Another bad omen is the large amount of second hand PA gear on facebook marketplace at giveaway prices. A pair of decent Peavey cabs usually £250/300 now going for a ton.
Worrying times.

Bad news indeed. I'm sure there will be a lot of this over the next 12 months. There's no future of live music until there's a vaccine or some other way of effectively stopping infection when people gather in crowds indoors.
I've not heard of any venues round here going under but it seems highly likely

Frank Turner's prototype socially distanced gig the other night was canned because it wasn't financially viable.
Doesn't look good for live music short of a vaccine I'm afraid.😕

Yes, music, theatres, cinemas, festivals, football etc all look totally fucked until people can safely gather together
I was wondering the other day whether we might get to a situation where there's less of a one size fits all approach
Given that we know certain groups are much higher risk might we have a situation where they have to shield and people deemed low risk can just get on with life. I appreciate that the free roaming population are still at risk of a nasty illness and possibly worse, but the stats are similar to other lower risks we take for granted.
Dunno, is that just too divisive? Or too subtle to manage?

Most punk gigs in recent years are socially distanced anyway as you're lucky if you get 30/40 punters in the smaller venues🙄

With increased liability insurance and the extra cost of sanitised venues, promoters are only going to be booking guaranteed crowd pullers.

Just heard that a promoter has booked Mike Peters (Alarm) to play in York this October. Promoter is saying 'Get your tickets, this is selling fast!' I expect by end of September it will be, 'Get your refunds, this ain't happening.'

Starting to get at some people. This from Ian McNabb (ex Icicle Works):
Shout our to my fellow musicians as the weekend comes around once more. Good God this is hard. I've played music live pretty much every weekend since 1975 except when I was in "real" bands (with record deals!) and we played during the week as well. As we learned pretty quickly though, only chart acts pull a crowd on a Tuesday. Your average punter (especially when they reach a certain vintage) can usually be tempted out on a Friday. A virus that is being made to appear like the end of the world when It Is not - I won't get into it again here as it gives the Leftwaffe their scrambling orders - has completely decimated the entertainment industry and robbed the public of JOY. You just cannot do this to us. Even during the bombing raids of WWII there was live music. In times of stress and uncertainty live music brings us together and gives us hope where we had very little or none. The rules here are unfathomable, you can sit in a pub/bar with your mates but you cannot do the same in a music venue. Music is not allowed - MUSIC IS VERBOTEN. But they let the football go ahead BECAUSE OF THE MONEY. This is fascism pure and simple. Every time there is a spike in cases - CASES - the whip comes down again. This Virus - and we all have a theory on it - is survivable by 99% of us - it is not about containment and protection - it is about using the fear content as an excuse to lay before us the Totalitarian way. Nothing will return to normality - now that we have shown we are kittens against tigers. We still have not been given a clear idea as to when we can return to work. The pittance allocated to grassroots venues will not enable them to survive and many have already gone to the wall. This virus - man made or not - is destroying us through anxiety, depression, worry and sadness. As Tavares once sang "Don't take away the music, It's the only thing I've got, It's my piece of the rock...
The notion that I will not be able to do a gig until next year (if I'm lucky) brings about a type of anxiety I've personally never experienced before. Whatever was going on in my head, getting out there and seeing the fans and making a racket made everything OK again - if only for a little while. Regardless of the loss of earnings, when the very thing you were born to do is taken away from you - you kinda stop living. Love to all my fellow musicians and most of all - the fans - who I know are missing it as much as we are.
I x
