Andy - what's the label you refer to ( above )? ...Globally, there are so many great independent record labels that thrive despite often being pushed to the back of the queue as the big record labels hogg the limited pressing plants there are out there. Two good UK DIY record labels are Drunken Sailor Records and Static Shock

...i remember Paul Morley giving The Crack a pretty bad review in the NME, using terminology like 'Sheet Metal' to describe their sound and making sarcastic comments when noting Malcolm's introduction to the live track 'Human Punk' that closes the album (Look, we're playing like a bunch of old f**king wankers at the moment, right?)
But i think The Crack has aged well, and so many bands say they were influenced by it.

I think people like Morley think their taste in music is infallable, possibly due to his Joy Division connection. However, it's all subjective. There's loads of influential music that they know he-haw about. No Ruts-No-Minor Threat-No Fugazi. No Ruts-No Operation Ivy-No scores of ska/punk bands.

Yeah, thing with journos is they often have to take a position, especially back then
The narrative at the time was that punk was washed up and music was moving on
I can imagine Morley coming to it with those prejudices. Probably only listened to it once or twice before hitting the typewriter
I still enjoy Morley's writing though. He's an interesting thinker if you can deal with his long winded, meandering style

He's not the worst offender by any means.
Most journalists like to think they're at the sharp end of music but the reality is that they're not, it's mostly the punters themselves.
A lot of them thought that the likes of Dischord Records/DC punk scene was just '80's punk'but it spawned probably one of the most influential bands of the 90's in Fugazi.
Even the likes of Johnny Marr and Boaby Gilliespie admit that they like them now...

In the shop today.
Babylon's Burning on the turntable.
Young person to his friend: " That's the sound police cars made before the Second World War."

Last summer, the guitarist from my band gave me a copy of 'Counter Culture?' as a part of a some Birthday presents.
If you are hoping for any kind of retread of 'The Crack' Punkiness, i think it's mostly fair to say you are going to be crushingly disappointed. but i think it's a really solid album with some great music on it... no two songs sound the same. There's elements of Post-Punk in there, and their love of (Dub) Reggae... but also Psychedelic Pop. Fave song for me is 'Poison Games' which has a touch of the cinematic John Barry about it
