The Ruts stand head and shoulders above most of the second wave punk groups I loves em You? Any particular favourite tracks? What do you make of post-Malcolm group Ruts DC?

Yes, just as the 77 punk first wave was either trying different directions or going a bit stale, they came along and showed the pogo was still relevant. Clutch of brilliant singles, Staring at the Rude Boys nails the tension at gigs of that period. West One, Shine On Me probably my fave both punk and anthemic at the same time. Saw them at Nottingham Polytechnic, possibly Grin and Bear It tour, sweaty drunken night.
DC? I've bought both those The Mad Professor Rhythm Collisions volumes (twenty years apart) enjoyed them but I don't have them now, which might say something.

Not a huge fan of Ruts DC but everything the Ruts did in 1979/80 was sensational.
'Staring at the Rude Boys' and 'Something that I Said' are two of the all time great punk records.
Can't fault them, even their reggae tracks I like👍

Adore both "versions" of the band, they were the best white reggae band for me, outdoing the Clash's efforts. The Crack was a classic album as well.

Dunno why I've never read that Doug - really should put that right
Who is the old Soho bohemian from the war?
Coincidentally I am currently reading Joan Wyndham's wartime diaries "Love Lessons" which is full of her encounters with bohemians during the Blitz. After a near-miss with a German bomb she is keen to lose her viginity.
It was chance that Wyndham came to be published. In the 1980s, her younger daughter, Camilla, found the wartime diaries in the attic and, enchanted by their mixture of naivety and loucheness, took them to the publishers William Heinemann. Like her friend Quentin Crisp, Joan relished becoming famous in later life.

i know Roland Link well, as we worked together on his book about the Screaming Dead. How he puts the pieces together of the giant jigsaw to tell the story of a bands history, really is quite something. He's also written two books on Stiff Little Fingers. The Ruts book is probably the one that he spent the most time on.
A deep regret for me, is i never saw the original Ruts with Malcolm. They were an extraordinary band. Thanks God there is some footage from European TV shows where they played live.

I always loved the signature tone, Paul Fox got in his guitar... utterly unique and unmistakable.
Even people that didn't particularly like Punk Rock, liked The Ruts

New LP too... DEAD MEN WALKING FREEDOM - It Ain't On The Rise
Dead Men Walking: FREEDOM – It Ain’t On The Rise – album review Dead Men Walking is the long-time side project of Theatre Of Hate & Spear Of Destiny founder Kirk Brandon; an evolving collective of friends from the punk scene that over the years has seen its numbers swelled by the likes of Glen Matlock, Slim Jim Phantom, Mike Peters, Capt. Sensible, through to Pete Wylie, and Billy Duffy; the current and seemingly stable line up consists of Brandon, Jake Burns from Stiff Little Fingers and both Segs and Dave Ruffy from Ruts DC. From 2001’s eponymously titled debut album, a raft of further live recordings have been released, whilst Graveyard Smashes Volume 1 was the first studio recording, this was followed up in 2015 with Easy Piracy – sadly, both releases are nigh on impossible to get hold of, hopefully, Freedom – It Ain’t On The Rise will be more readily available.
We get thirteen tracks which includes four new Brandon and Segs compositions specifically written for Dead Men Walking during the recent lockdown, the restrictions demanding a non-traditional approach to making the album – Ruffy, Segs and Kirk recording their parts at Pat Collier’s Perry Vale Studio in South London and Jake Burns recording his contributions at his home studio in Chicago. The album was then mixed in Brixton by Greg ‘Wizard’ Fleming.Rest here.... louderthanwar.com/dead-men-walking-freedom-it-aint-on-the-rise-album-review/

^ Cheers LE, I'll check that out. I saw them what I thought was just a few years ago, however, I just had a look at the photo's I took and it was actually 2006!
You could tell that they all got on well by their banter, and the fact that they really seemed to be having a good time playing made it a top night.
Line-up was Kirk Brandon, Cptn. Sensible, Mike Peters and Slim Jim Phantom.
