A farce again with grassroots clubs still awaiting decisions. The Isthmian League still haven't decided to dump the season when it's bloody obvious it has to happen. Nationwide tier 2 (south and north are likely to end also but with some convoluted method for promotion) My local side I followed up until they got promoted from the Kent League to a higher level (they got too fancy pants for me after that, we weren't allowed to travel on the team coach to away games anymore) for a decade and I knew the chairman very well and if he hadn't been a wealthy builder they would have gone under on myriad occasions. Cost him about 30k+ a year to keep them afloat with one other money man also putting in the same. When you are getting about 100 through the turnstyle only and sharing a ground so you get no beer sales the margins are very tight. Had some great times getting pissed with the players though (they did like to "streak" through other clubs chairmans lounges) and spent one game sat next to Michael Howard MP (A man I would happily shoot as a MP) and chatted to him about football all through the match, he actually knew his stuff. It's a great laugh at grassroots level and so important to local communities. Thank God all the ducks should be in line for normality next season, the 12k per team hand out for Isthmian level and below from the Government will help a tiny bit but many teams may yet collapse.

Great stuff Doug Who was that local team you followed for a decade? I'm one of the (thousands of) owners of Clapton Community Football Club who recently got the green light to return to their old ground - The Old Spotted Dog, supposedly the oldest existing football ground. I'm hoping the work will be finished and I can go see them play at the OSD next season More here... www.claptoncfc.co.uk/This is the away shirt that went viral and sold thousands all over the world...
Needless to say I have one

Cray Wanderers, then of the Kent League. World's 2nd oldest football club. Incidentally, all football competitions below the National League (DIV 5) is now officially over for this season.

Thanks Doug I know the name obviously but not much else Yeah, head about "the curtailment" of National League South/North and below Understandably though makes me wonder why the decision wasnt taken sooner

There is some talk about grassroots clubs setting up some mini competitions among themselves in May/June/July to raise some desperately needed income.

I'm watching this on BT atm. Even though there is more talent in one of Ronaldo's toes, this is a real fire and thunder game.

That is worrying doug
Be a tragedy if Whyteleafe cannot continue
How do property developers get hold of community assets like football grounds?

That is worrying doug Be a tragedy if Whyteleafe cannot continue How do property developers get hold of community assets like football grounds? Often the previous landlord goes bust as in the case of Whyteleafe and is bought from administrators, obviously these lower league clubs cannot afford to buy them as they operate on very tight margins and often sub 200 crowds. Looks like the new owner here made all the right noises but then backed away and refused to even negotiate a new lease. Look at this page for a sick joke. www.irama.world/location.php

At Abingdon they had to pay £200 to hire the pitch for a game and even £25 for use of the kitchen. Irama took 75 per cent of any sponsorship. Irama also own the ground of Northern Premier League East side Brighouse Town who have five years left on their lease.
