...there are so many great bands from that era and that movement, that would blow your mind. You just have to pick your way carefully through the more generic.
I think America kept the flame of Punk alive in the 80s, when it was in decline here.

Was this better than Discharge back in the early 80's?
Some may think so.
Regardless, the sound they got on this is absolutely astonishing.

I was quite a fan of US hardcore in the 80's, still am, tbh. I loved Bad Brains, DOA (Canadian), MDC, and the like. (The "straight edge" bands seemed a bit preachy and mealy-mouthed though).
One band that started out as hardcore and progressed into a more soulful, low-fi blues punk band were the wonderful Replacements:

D.O.A.'s album Hardcore 81 was probably the first time i heard the word used regarding music and some of their songs suited that terminology but they also had their other foot firmly planted in Punk and Heavy Rock too. Those early records are classics...

From my limited knowledge I can only think of The Minutemen and Husker Du - though I expect there must be quite a few The Replacements really are an extreme example though

ALOT of the better bands that emerged from the Hardcore scene from the early 80s evolved and often suffered a backclash from some of their fans/critics
Early Meat Puppets was short bursts of noise... but by their second album they were mixing alot of Hillbilly and Country influences in their sound Kurt Cobain was a huge fan.

I don't think I've ever listened to the Meat Puppets and was not aware of their transformation Thanks Andy Fascinating and inspirational, as always

Meat Puppets II is the only album i have by them, but over nearly 40 years, they have been very prolific.
TSOL's sound evolved from Hardcore in a short space of time too... from 1981...
From 1982...
