My son is 25 and has never thrown or taken a punch. The same goes for most of his friends. When I tell them stories about the 70's they look at me like they think I'm making it up

There is nothing good about violence but sometimes it is necessary.
It's good that your son hasn't been involved with violence as it dehumanises people.

Lead being taken out of petrol seems to be a popular explanation.

You win some, you lose some👊 Now that I think about it, I don’t I ever lost an organised skirmish but I’ve been jumped at least twice in my life. When the police arrested one of them my dad refused to press charges, he then went on to rob a 12-year one girl at knifepoint and now he’s in prison and I’m laid in bed listening to music. I lost the battle but I won the war baby!!

My kids have had a fair share of shit to deal with due to their mixed race at school, but nothing too extreme so far. Regaling the joys of having the shit kicked out of oneself over clothing / hairstyle / music preferences does put things into perspective for them.

Getting picked on cos of what we looked like certainly gave some of us punx a feeling of empathy with persecuted minorities and fuelled our interest in ANL, RAR etc back in the day. Of course, we had the luxury of being able to choose what we looked like... unlike victims of racism. First world problems!

That sounds awful, what the fuck is wrong with people? I didn’t leave school that long ago and I don’t recall ever seeing anything like that go down.

I got punched in the ribs quite hard 5 years ago in Manchester city centre after taking exception to a young bloke saying the words n*gger and p*ki. Quite painful to cough for quite a few weeks after.
Been threatened for objecting to peoples shitty behaviour on buses, trams. I try to wear my headphones and avoid any conflict now, it's just not worth it.

That was brave of you Stu.
I had a similar experience on a bus going to work around 6 or so years ago.
This waster/alkie fuckhead got on at the Gallowgate and within minutes started abusing this Chinese woman and her wean as soon as he sat down.
The 2 or 3 other passengers stared out of the window turning the other cheek and I thought I'm not having this and told him to get off. He said'make me ya cunt' to which I snapped and grabbed this disheveled wretch by the scruff of the neck as we approached the next stop.
Fortunately, the driver already had the door open as the bus approached Parkhead
It's never easy to deal with but the alternative is to ignore it which in my opinion is even worse.
