If it was MES and 16 Russian Ice Skaters on bongos, it was still The Fall....
2015 Russian Synchronised Skating Team dance to 'The Joke' by the Fall
RIP Mark E Smith (5/3/57-24/1/18)

" There are those who say good old Mark Smith and there are those who have met him in real life." Billy Bragg.
MES a prick of the highest order. Feted by a sycophantic music press and John Peel (who should have known better). The Emperor's New Clothes has never been more apt for his tuneless, nonsensical lyric babble.
And what was he at the end? A toothless, Tory voting pisshead in a Northern boozer castigating asylum seekers to anyone daft enough to listen. Called out Veggies and Vegans as weeds, then ran off when one threatened to smack him one.
Oh and his band hated him as well.

Yes. A bully and an arsehole.
I disagree about the music though.
Saw them at least 10 times and, whilst variable, always compelling

There was no denying his vocal style but I just didn't get the hype around the Fall.
I didn't know much about his right wing views but it's hardly surprising.
Lots of old punks have turned right wing or nazi.
I mean you can now add Smith to the list along with Wobble, Lydon, Morrissey etc

Never got it apart from the odd track. Totally original mind and lyrics though. He died a few days before my mum did so I suppose I'll always associate her with him which is blackly amusing to me. ;-)

Unique, one-off and all that. I had no idea what the fuck he was on about half the time, but I enjoyed it. Saw the band live once or maybe twice; great. It was known he was difficult and probably an arsehole from early on. I never tried to keep up with the album a year and I can only imagine that his latter output was patchy, but all the late 70s and early 80s material was pretty good. Drink the long draught, Dan

Do we automatically equate Brexit supporting with being right wing?
I dunno. It certainly attracts a lot of that type but I am not sure we can crudely characterise everyone who voted to leave as rabidly right wing.
I can't remember exactly what MES said now. He was an alcoholic whose brain and body were seriously damaged by a lifetime of abuse, and so prone to talk quite a lot of rubbish.
None of his latter day utterances bear any scrutiny. You wouldn't try and get sense and coherence from a pissed up alchoholic talking shit in a pub or a park or wherever. He was no different. Very sad.
I had to stop going to see The Fall because I found the sight of him too depressing. It felt to me that by turning up after about 2010 I was just enabling his abuse and self destruction

Apparently being right wing is the new punk rock in some quarters.
I have sadly found due to the internet that some of my musical heroes are needy self absorbed and quite obnoxious.

The Fall rarely played old songs live however one song enjoyed a long period as the encore/set closer
It always got the crowd bouncing around and joining in with the "he is not appreciated" line
And the "check the record, check the record, check the guy's track record" bits
Still sounds bloody great
Happy memories
