Kevin Cummings in an interview I just read....I once went to Manchester to photograph Mark E Smith for his label, Sanctuary. They didn’t send a PR with me, because they assumed it’d run smoothly because I knew him. I went to the rehearsal room at the appointed time but it was locked up. I assumed he (and The Fall) would be in the nearest pub. They were.
“You took your time, cocker,” said Mark. The pub was in a pretty dodgy part of Salford. All the curtains were closed, as if they hadn’t been told about the years-old change in the licensing laws, that allowed them to open in the afternoon. I took my camera out to get a photo of Mark with a pint, to add to my collection of similar shots, when a fearsome looking guy, who’d been drinking in the Vault came in and asked why I was taking Mark’s photo. Mark said, “he fancies me.” The guy ignored it, looked around and saw guitar cases. He asked if we were a band. Mark ignored him. He asked again and added, “would I have heard of you?” Mark stared him down and replied: “how the fuck do I know what you’ve heard of." “Try me,” said the guy, with a mix of menace and worn down patience. Mark took a mouthful of beer, then stared at him and said, “The Fucking Beatles”. The rest of the band held their breath and stared into their pints. The guy looked down at Mark, who had continued to concentrate on his pint, and just said, “Good name mate.” Then he walked back into the other room. Nobody spoke, then Mark said, “are were having another one then.” Looked at me and continued, "It’s got to be Salford’s richest man’s round.” That was par for the course every time I shot The Fall.

This is from “the fucking Beatles” session (see previous post).
While we were taking these shots near the pub, a couple of kids (one wearing a Man United shirt) shouted across to Mark, asking him who he was - was he famous. Mark stared at them and replied, “Who am I? I’m the man who is going to kick your arse if you don’t fuck off, and I’m more famous than anyone who’s worn that piece of shit [pointing to his United shirt]. So piss off now, there’s good lads.”

I usually have an open mind to all kinds of music but must admit that I never ever understood this band and what they were about. Why John Peel was so infatuated with them I will never understand...and the sound of Smiths voice is just such a huge turn off...."psycho mafia" was good, though

Along with Elvis Costello, MES had to be the worst singer I've ever heard.
'Bingo Masters Breakout' was a good song but as far as discordant noise goes, Give me Disorder anyway.

Show Elvis some love..He may not be Otis Redding or Sam Cooke but he makes the best of what god gave him ...I am a fan and think he has a good (but limited) voice

Never seen the attraction. He was always musically insipid.

Each to their own
You either get it or you don't, and for those that do it's catnip
Insipid? - try a bit of Blindness, crank it up mind....
The Fall - Blindness (Peel Session version)

'Bingo Masters Breakout' was a good song but as far as discordant noise goes, Give me Disorder anyway. whereas Mark.E fits into the "old man shouting at the bus stop" school of singing, Costello is more a "marmite" voice. i think he at times sounds brilliant although I am not much of a fan of his stuff. I suppose it takes you into the area of the difference between "singer" and "vocalist"

Good point about singer vs vocalist
Very subjective thing though isn't it. Fall definitely had their moments. So did Costello

Did you listen Stu? Sounds pretty intersting Henry Rollins, of Black Flag and Rollins Band fame, joins the Hanleys on this weeks edition of Oh! Brother. The guys discuss meeting Mark and The Fall's impact in America, amongst the usual tales of gigs and studios.
