Aye, top band and so influential.
Even their pop stuff blows most bands away.
They had that 'cool' look even without trying which showed you how genuine they were and are

As His Lordship correctly states, Killing Joke are one of my all time favourite bands. A lot of you probably already knew that.
Over the years, they've changed and morphed but always retained an identifiable element of Joke-ness.
The more obsessive fans refer to the first 3 albums as "The holy trinity" and these are indeed the albums that defined the Joke. The first two are abrasive mutant punk-funk, the third (Revelations) a colder, more deliberately European distillation of their essence. This track is from Revelations ;
The next couple of albums found the band (mainly Jaz Coleman) trying to turn massive cult success into cold, hard cash. "Fire dances" (the 4th album) suffered badly from this, not helped by Youth's departure due to a psychedelic drug crisis. Personally, I was massively disappointed by my first listen to this album and I still think it's hugely flawed by inferior songs, a flat production and a corny concept.
"Night time" saw the band fully embrace commerciality and spawned the likes of "Love like blood" & "Kings and queens", both chart botherers. Although it was nice to see KJ on both TOTP and The Tube during this time, I still pined for the "real" Joke.
They then released a series of albums which completely lost me. Pretentious sub-prog nonsense with over-long, laboured songs.
In 1990, they made a real return to form with the "Pandemonium" album, featuring a returned Youth on bass and production duties.
Subsequent albums have been hit and miss but live performances remained strong and largely convincing, even though Jaz became more of a ham than a genuinely demented performer.
I prefer to remember them in their prime, dripping with existential menace and making pounding, dense, primal music.

A group that showed the way forward. This is an absolute beast of a number

I like a few of their songs. My favourite band the Chameleons played live with them in the early 80s and fell out with them leading to a song called Paper Tigers. I don't think there's any doubt that this is an astonishing piece of sound.

Killing Joke are easily one of the most influential bands of the last 40 years... there's the obvious bands: Amebix, 1919, Faith No More, Senser, Ministry, Nine Inch Nails but beyond that there are no doubt hundreds that don't even realise they are walking in the footsteps of giants.
I have pretty much all Killing Joke's albums... even a weaker album has a couple of gems. Absolute Dissent and their last album Pylon are my favourites from recent releases...

Having bigged up the first 3 KJ albums, it would be remiss of me not to give an honourable mention to "ha" (10" live e.p from 1982) and Youth's pet project "Killing Joke In Dub".

Bassy, As our resident Dub Head what's your verdict on "Killing Joke In Dub"? Killing Joke: In Dub: This World Hell (Alive & Kicking Dub)It's a very mixed bag. I've got the 3 CD set and all of the discs are slightly different in character. Youth's new mixes aren't pure Dub. There's a lot of Dancehall, ambient, trance and all sorts of other elements chucked in. Makes for an interesting listen, variety-wise. The project was his "baby" and I suspect that the rest of the band just left him to get on with it. Anybody familiar with the material released on his Dragonfly label will recognise the vibe. There's a fair bit of material which has been available for some time as b-sides, bonus tracks etc. I'd been keenly anticipating the album and my initial reaction was of slight disappointment. However, there's a huge amount of music to absorb and anybody who likes both KJ and Dub will definitely find a lot to enjoy.

After 'Revelations'I got into other sounds so only heard them sporadically after.
However, as I said previously the below album would blow most punk bands away. Only KJ could out Amebix the Amebix and Amebix were influenced by Killing Joke.

There seems to be a lot of love for KJ's first album, so here's Youth's dub mix of a choon from that record.

More KJ inna Dub stylee. Unlike a lot of KJ's dub remixes, some of Geordie's guitar remains in the mix. This just makes it all the better.
