I was at the opening of Mike Coles's exhibition at the Espacio Gallery, just off Brick Lane, last night. If anybody is in London I'd recommend a look. There's some excellent pieces, many of them taking ideas and inspiration from his work with Killing Joke and some of the other bands he's worked with.

A Ridiculous Collection Of Mercenary Rhymes
11-17 March 2024
Private View: Tuesday 12 March 5-9pm
This is a re-imagined version of the 2018 exhibition that accompanied a pack of playing cards designed and illustrated by Michael Coles. The original images have been re-interpreted in the graphic style of mid-20th century pulp/film noire, giving more prominence to the rhymes themselves.
A note from the original exhibition:
“I work with musicians a lot and they are constantly remixing and deconstructing their own music so I thought this would be a good approach to my own graphic work. I’ve always wanted to illustrate a set of playing cards and I started working on this, mixing and remixing my own imagery to produce 52 cards + 4 jokers. This wasn’t enough though, I wanted to make it more than a deck of cards, so I decided to produce a book of the images from the cards. But this still wasn’t enough, it needed words and I started playing around with nursery rhymes, with which I’ve had a long-time fascination. I borrowed, embellished and contaminated occasional
lines from traditional rhymes, but the majority are from my own unscrupulous imagination”
The exhibition is accompanied by a lavishly illustrated book featuring the original illustrations and the re-imagined versions featured in this exhibition.
Opening hours:
Daily 11am - 6pm
