Devoto was undoubtedly ahead of his time, and clever, but for me a bit too clever to be really enjoyable. I also found his voice grated a bit.
Magazine were superb musicians, though.

I know what you mean Secondhand Daylight, the second album has not stood up too well, and is quite hard work and contains a bit too much of Dave Formula's keyboards That said, their best work is transcendent Plenty of Real Life is superb and, after the misstep of Secondhand Daylight, they got better if anything
The Correct Use of Soap is where it really all comes together
In a parallel universe Because You're Frightened was a massive hit

A vivid memory for me is when Alan 'Fluff' Freeman played two tracks from ' Real Life' on his Saturday Rock show, which was predominantly the domain of Prog. Pretty sure he played ' Motorcade' and then ' The Light Pours Out Of Me' - when it finished i sat there in my bedroom in silence, my jaw agape. I really didn't have much money to buy many records back then... but getting my mitts on that album was mandatory

'Second Hand Daylight' just doesn't grab me as much 'Real Life' and TCUOS.
To me they still had that punk vibe although they had transcended it which is what all the good bands do.
Punk but not punk if that makes sense.
I remember buying 'Sweetheart Contract'when it first came out and was astonished how they could surpass anything off 'Real Life'.
Incredible.

As I've said in another thread, Magazine played some of the best gigs I have ever witnessed. Real Life and Correct Use Of Soap are the standout albums for me.

Bloody great mostly. Still no idea what a Tulpa is.

A Tulpa is an imaginary friend who comes to life.
Far too clever and arty for the average dummy record buyer. This is one of the greatest singles of the seventies.

Luxuria should have got more acclaim than they did, which is why Howard gave up music to work in a photographic agency for years until the demand for Magazine to reform grew too strong for him to resist.
I think this comes from a SNUB TV appearance, i have it on an old VHS somewhere...
