The Cure bassist Simon Gallup announces he’s quit band after 40 years: ‘Fed up of betrayal’
The bassist, who has been with the band for 40 years, shared the news on his Facebook page, writing: ‘With a slightly heavy heart I am no longer a member of the Cure ! Good luck to them all …’
After a follower asked if he was ok, Gallup wrote: ‘I’m OK… just got fed up of betrayal.’
While The Cure have yet to issue a statement on Gallup’s apparent departure, keyboardist Roger O’Donnell seemed to reference the situation on Twitter, when he wrote: ‘A friend just told me they saw Lol in the Guitar Centre buying a bass?’
Lol Tolhurst was a founding member and former drummer and keyboardist for the band.
After a fan replied: ‘Hey Roger, good to see Lol trying out new stuff but is it true what Simon said about leaving the band?’, he wrote: ‘Who EVER said Cure fans don’t have a sense of humour!’
Gallup, 61, is the longest-serving original member of The Cure aside from frontman Robert Smith, having joined the group in 1979.
He left in 1982 after a clash with Smith, but returned to the group in 1984 after they made up, with Gallup even serving as Smith’s best man at his wedding in 1988.
Aside from a health-related hiatus in 1992, Gallup has remained with The Cure ever since, and has served as bassist for 11 out of the band’s 13 albums – he is missing from Three Imaginary Boys and Japanese Whispers – as well as also playing keyboard over the years.
Speaking about their relationship in 2019, Smith, 62, said: ‘For me, the heart of the live band has always been Simon, and he’s always been my best friend. It’s weird that over the years and the decades he’s often been overlooked. He doesn’t do interviews, he isn’t really out there and he doesn’t play the role of a foil to me in public, and yet he’s absolutely vital to what we do.
