Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane MacGowan directed by Julien Temple is on BBC Four on 16 March 2021 at 10 pm www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m000t84rThe definitive documentary on musical icon Shane MacGowan. One to watch through your fingers no doubt, hope it's subtitled.

Definitive is the word, at two hours it encompasses not only his musical career but details his infant life and the things around him that would shape the songs later. Potted history of the troubles through his own eyes as well.
Only (minor) quibble, why does Johnny Depp need to adopt an Irish accent whilst interviewing MacGowan.
Subtitles advised as his most recent interviews are almost incoherent mumbles.

Thanks PU - looking forward to this
I once spent a night in a Soho bar with Shane - locked in til 2 or 3 am. He was very entertaining with an infectious laugh. This was before he was totally ravaged by booze.

Will give my thoughts then.

Watched almost all of this now
I'm really impressed
Does Shane justice - warts n all
Also a great reminder of just how many stunning songs he managed to write when The Pogues were at their zenith
So sad to see the way it turned to ash for the group, and Shane cuts a truly tragic figure these days, but I don't suppose he would not have had it any other way

Finished it now
Not much to add really, just to reiterate how much I enjoyed it but also how sad it is that he has all but destroyed himself too

Elvis Costello got very short shrift. Perhaps a bit of jealousy about Cait? Who knows?
The resulting album Rum Sodomy LP was unquestionably their finest hour (along with the Poguetry in Motion EP)
I must read that EC memoir. He's an articulate fellow who must have a plethora of great stories

Crock of Gold was a broad sweep and more about MacGowan the man rather than MacGowan the artist. Personally I'm much more interested in the former and, on those terms, it was undeniably a success. Some people might have wanted a bit more about the music, and perhaps Irish music in general?
One minor quibble was with the sycophancy of all the interviewers. Johnny Depp?! Jeez. Had his tongue so far up... etc etc.
The most insightful comments came from Shane's sister who really seemed to have the measure of him and most accurately spoke in favour of his good points and about how the drink and drugs turned him into a different person completely

Yeah... i could have done of less of Johnny Depp and more of his family and people who were actually in bands with him. No one from The Pogues is interviewed, (apart from brief archive footage) which is rather telling. I didn't know that Frank Murray worked them to the point of breakdown... 300 gigs in one year is slavery
Here's what i wrote about it on Farcebook...
CROCK OF GOLD: A FEW ROUNDS WITH SHANE MACGOWAN I watched this last night. I have an old Arena Documentary on Shane on a VHS, somewhere, but this goes into ALOT more detail. Shot in Julian Temple's distinctive cut & paste mixed media style, a fascinating, funny and tragic look at Shane's life from his Childhood in Tipperary (Wikipedia says he was born in Kent??) moving to London, embracing Punk Rock, forming his first band The Nipple Erectors, then The Pogues and beyond. Shane isn't exactly a shining positive example of the benefits of a life of heavy drinking, wheelchair bound by the age of 60 and narrowly avoiding leg amputation, he has aged badly… a real life cantankerous Father Jack! But an amazing life none the less.

Very well put Andy. The lack of any of his bandmates speaks volumes.
James Fearnley's book Here Comes Everybody focuses on the group as a collective. The individual members get equal billing so a useful and interesting corrective to Crock of Gold
This is a film about Shane though and very uncritical. Julien Temple prefers to focus on his talents as a songwriter and his wild life. Clearly a very different film could be made about his less attractive qualities.

...i could be wrong, but his wife came across in the Documentary as a little bit strange, rather detatched ...she talks to him, like a casual acquaintance interviewing him, rather than someone that deeply loves him. Apparently, Shane's 'Net Worth' is around £18 Million... i'll just leave it there

£18 mil! That's what a Xmas favourite will do for the auld bank balance
We even get to see the recent wedding on the doc. Yes, a strange and unlikely couple to be sure
As Mrs Merton famously asked Debbie McGee...
“So Debbie, what first attracted you to the millionaire, Paul Daniels?”

Yes, a strange and unlikely couple to be sure As Mrs Merton famously asked Debbie McGee... “So Debbie, what first attracted you to the millionaire, Paul Daniels?” Think that's a bit unfair, they've been together a long time and she must have put up with a hell of a lot. Seems genuine affection there.
