We have to be able to tell the difference. Lenny Bruce used to get the house lights turned on and then go, "look, a nigger at that table, look, a kike at that one, look there's a spic and a wetback over there" then he would gradually get into a discussion on how we have to desensitize the words and take their "power" away, and then the kids wouldn't come home crying from school because they've been called those names. Were someone to do that act today they wouldn't get past the first bit and they would be vilified for the use of a few words, rather than listening and understanding context and point. Audience reaction has something to do with it as well. I was at school with a black lad called Roy who was obsessed with some Bernard Manning-style blue comedian. I can't remember the name – I think it was something like Jimmy Johnson, but this was 40 years ago. Whenever Jimmy Johnson (or whatever he was called) played a show anywhere in the south of England, Roy would travel to see him – no matter the cost or the travelling time involved. On one occasion, he persuaded somebody from school to go with him. The bloke was dumbfounded when he came in the following morning. Apparently Johnson had singled out Roy, who was the only black person in the audience, and started racially abusing him: "All right, Sambo? Why aren't you back in the jungle?" and so on. After the show, the guy asked Roy how he had felt about that. "Oh, he does that every time," Roy replied. "It's kind of his thing." None of us quite understood what was going on, but Roy wasn't stupid enough to give money to someone who was actually a racist, so he must have considered himself in on the joke in some way or thought Johnson was being ironic or postmodern.

My Facebook feed has just received an Amazon advert for Love Thy Neighbour DVD box set. Never thought that would ever have seen the light of day again. More worryingly is why have I been targeted?

Which maniac is aggressively marketing a Love Thy Neighbour box set in 2022? V disturbing that Facebook's sophisticated algorithms have pegged you as part of the target audience PU

My Facebook feed has just received an Amazon advert for Love Thy Neighbour DVD box set. Never thought that would ever have seen the light of day again. More worryingly is why have I been targeted? Some friends of mine have that boxed set and showed me the first two episodes. Whilst not brilliant, they were rather better than I remembered and so I made the mistake of watching the remainder on YouTube. Let's just say that the first two episodes definitely flatter to deceive. The original premise of the series – two men who are seemingly very different (one black, one white; one socialist, one a Tory; one proudly working-class, the other aspirational) but have the same outlook and similar personalities (both are very racist and specifically dislike Chinese people) – was a good one, but was very badly realised: lots of typically sitcom-ish setups, trading insults in place of actual jokes, and so on. The only really funny episode is the second one, in which the white character challenges his black neighbour to a limbo dancing contest at their social club. Being an idiot, the white man assumes his black counterpart will be an expert in limbo dancing and starts panicking that he will end up humiliated, as well as with a back injury. Knowing nothing about limbo dancing, and not being in much better physical shape, the black character is also terrified of putting his back out. Being two cheeks of the same arse, the two men both hit on the same idea: they simply won't turn up at the agreed time and will go to the social club later, when the other one has gone home. The episode ends with them both turning up at the same time and exchanging a glance as they know they're going to have to go through it and end up injured: each man knows he could stop the process instantly by simply saying he doesn't want to do it, but they're both too pig-headed to lose face in front of one another and in front of their friends. If it had had a few more episodes like this, it might have been worth watching. As it is, the only truly great piece of dialogue in the series was the following: BLACK MAN (ranting to his wife about his white neighbour's racism): Do you know what he calls the Chinese bloke at the chip shop? "Chairman Mao". HIS WIFE (raising her eyebrows): Oh yes? That would be the one you refer to as "Chu-Chin-Chow", would it?

What a shower of wimpy fannies 😄 Do they understand irony and/or satire? Just as well GG Allin isn't still here.... Also, slavery doesn't necessarily apply to the slave trade. Not in the context of their band. I doubt it can be construed as trivialising the word 'slaves'. In fact, used properly it can be used powerfully. 'Wage slavery' is a perfectly legitimate description.

RE 'Slaves'
The Twitter 'conversation'( which can be viewed by non twits)makes some interesting points.
We have the usual hipster outrage about how 'slaves' relates to the slave trade(which it does)but then they start taking 'ownership of the right to use it because some of them happen to be black so the usage of 'slaves' in any other context is considered racist and offensive.
Someone points out the slavery of the Irish in the 17th century and the slavery of a lot of white people under the Roman Empire and the hipster elite are strangely silent.
Also, the fact that we're all slaves under capitalism isn't to deride the brutality of the slave trade but to parallel the coercion as a simplified analogy.
I thought we knew all this🤔

Try 'Curry and Chips' wasn't that Johnny Speight and followed his pattern of highlighting racism rather than condoning it? As with Sadowitz, and on the music path people like Laiback and Death In June etc, it's always a risky path, ambiguity is certainly not allowed now.

Just seems everyone is terrified of upsetting those who spend their whole time trying to be upset.
