I saw a fair few groups back in the new wave but none of them rocked me as hard as The Clash did.

Hold on the Ramones not a punk band ??!! !er...What other first wave bands would you class as “not punk”? The Clash after 79 is the most obvious one. Adam and the Ants. The Only Ones
So, The Clash + Give 'Em Enough Rope = Punk London Calling onwards = not punk
And singles-wise...
The Cost of Living EP = not punk?
And everything after that London Calling, Train In Vain, Bankropper, Hitsville UK
So was it just the change in sound?
Or had something else happened?
And why does Give 'Em Enough Rope get a pass?
I'd agree that both London Calling and Bankrobber are good songs(although the latter goes on too long)but they were aberrations at that point. GEER is a strange one as its good songs have the spirit of the punk Clash yet at the same time you can see that spirit dying too. After that they just didn't have the talent. I bought both 'London Calling' the album and 'Sandinista' when both came out and occasionally I still try to play them but they're really painful to listen to.

Yeah, Sandanista is a bit annoying but a playlist of the best tracks is still enjoyable
I'm baffled by your response to London Calling. I realise you might not find it punky enough but "painful to listen to"?
There's some of their best songs on that album - and best songwriting
But I understand that's not your response

Other than the title track, Hateful, Clapdown and the Guns of Brixton its mince. Not a punk record thankfully. I think a lot of people pretend to like it just because it's the Clash and you should like it when they know its dreadful.👍

It's a bit of a stretch to justify this photo here, but it does have a Clash connection. The bloke in the sunglasses went to visit another friend who was living in London in the late 1980s or early 1990s and he sent me the photo. On the back it says:
'Chesh in Brixton - the famous Granville Arcade. Where's the Clash, then?'
Yeah, I'm sure that's their van out the front

Of all the awful songs that appeared on 'Sandinista' this wee tune stands out as a small ray of light in the darkness.
The one time it worked.👍

after all the major RAR events the Clash played with the exception of Mick Jones at the second RAR festival they all fucked off to their CBS hotel literally seconds after coming off the stage. I'm not surprised. I saw them play back in the day and they rocked so hard they must have needed a rest afterwards. Added to The Clash thread - should anyone want to continue the discussion over here

Just playing this beaut which still sounds as beautiful, majestic and moving as it ever did
Brothers and sisters, crank it up and rejoice
The Clash - Justice Tonight / kick it over

...for a long time i didn't know "Armagideon Time" was a cover. It always reminds me of December 1979 and the run up to Christmas. Being an audio nerd, my brother used to marvel at the production. it sounds amazing on a good set of speakers. The Clash were expanded their music palette WAY beyond Rock.
