Hold onto your hats...
The crops hit the stiffs an' the spikes whipped the quiffs They're all looking 'round The crops hit the stiffs an' the spikes whipped the quiffs They're all looking 'round for the last gang in town

The A side took me several plays before the realisation of what a magnificent song it was, can't think of any of their other songs which builds up to a crescendo. The b side is a more immediate rocker with standard verse and chorus, albeit fantastic lyrics. Unlike other major punk players of the time, The Clash must have credit for a lot of their singles and b sides not appearing on albums. After Remote Control, there is a good run of stand alone 7 inchers. I recorded this off the wireless and played it and the tape to death while dying my hair in the bathroom for the first time. When I finished dying my hair and put the torn jeans and Tshirt on with an old school blazer with zips and badges all over it and went to a youth club disco...I can still remember how proud and different I felt walking up the road. I asked for it to be played at the disco but the DJ looked at me and said he did not have it but would play some punk later, TRB and Blondie followed by the Boomtown rats. Mum told an irate dad in the morning that it was just a faze to calm him down a bit... quite a long faze

A bit controversial, but I thought this song was a pretty good effort and one I still have an ear worm to. youtu.be/YNM5Zf1kgNILyrically quite strong I thought. Patriots of the wasteland torching two hundred years Dragging my spirit back into the dungeon again Bring back crucifixion cry the moral death's head legion Using steel nails manufactured by the slaves in asia [Chorus] You won't fall for that law and order is a baton in the rib You won't fall for that just like your mummy & your daddy did [Verse 2] Blood inside a fountain pen wrote you out of life again & who knows any better than to kick and scratch under english weather From a chain gang to the mill. The mill that sits on top of the hill The fog drowned towns arr gonna have to fade The wrong side of the a scissor blade [Chorus] [Bridge] I'll eat my hat i'm gonna be sick They own the pack while we play the three card trick [Outro] Don't you remember the place Where we hid the ace? Yeah not thick but slick Now we all gotta play the three card trick

White Riot was the only Clash song played at our disco. V2 never got played even though they rehearsed in the same building. GLC and What Have We Got were regulars. Swearing IS big and clever.

Just enjoying Magnificent Seven - floors me every time. What a song. Love it Yeah, still enjoy listening to that song. Great lyrics and hook. Have it on a CD I play in the car, and my 8yo knows all the lyrics. Hope for him yet.

In my Feral Youth, i struggled with The Clash's later records at first... it didn't match my mood it felt like some kind of Punk Rock Betrayal. i came to appreciate them later as my musical palette expanded in the 80s.
This song reminds me of making my own Clash Mix tape in my little humble Bedsit

To be honest Andy, the reason I didn't like the Clash's later stuff was because they just couldn't write a decent tune after 1978.
Theres probably around 6 or 7 songs after 78 which I enjoy but the fact is that they just didn't have the talent to go beyond punk.

Pail Simonen's finest moment I reckon but the whole song is wonderful.
When I come across the other 5 I'll let you know as'Broadway' is already included.

Two songs about the Clash tonight on University Challenge.
One was what was the name of the band which didn't feature their main singer(followed by'Guns of Brixton')
The other one was What was the connection between 'London Calling' and Lowry the painter...
Next week, an intimate examination of GG Allin's love life.
