I remember the Tartan Army coming to London in the late 70s. Pubs shut, shops boarded up their windows, people stayed out of the centre of town. Hardly the reaction of a friendly bunch of fans. People were terrified. In fairness the Tartan Army are now completely reinvented as friendly and welcome anywhere. Not sure when the change happened though. I think they have always been great visitors everywhere else, it was only when they came to London it would get nasty.

Granted that the 'Tartan Army' had a lot more working class fans back in the 70's but to suggest they invaded London like William Wallace is ludicrous ๐ The 'Tartan Army' now are a mixture of rugby fans, stupid Scotttish nationalists, yokels from the sticks and other assorted Scottish football fans who support the'national' team because they're utterly bored with their own clubs. There is a sizeable amount of deluded Celtic fans who support the Scottish national team but very few huns by comparison-they tend to support your lot. Birds of a feather....๐

My uncle was at that game but I wouldn't class the Tartan Army as hooligans in anyway. A lot of them are naive fantasists and not just about football. They have a really weird idea of what Scotland actually is. As someone who lives near Hampden, they drink in all the Irish/Celtic pubs on matchday so you can have a chat with them, they're pretty ignorant about Scotland's history and a lot of them voted 'No'in the 2014 referendum. The majority aren't from Glasgow either and I've boozing around the Southside for nearly 40 years. We also used to get a fair few English soccer hooligans going up and down Victoria Road trying to cause trouble but they never dared come near the navvy pubs and the local Asian youth kicked them all the way back to Queens Park train station until their police escorts bundled them on trains back to Central Station. This would have been the late 80's I guess. I think that attempting to make what are really sweeping generalisations or excuses for large varied groups of people are doomed to failure. If England fans boo a knee being taken, you will say it is "racism" If the Tartan Army invade a pitch and rip up turf and destroy goalposts though, they aren't "hooligans in any way", but "naive fantasists". ย ย I don't care if we condemn all, acquit all or take the correct more nuanced view, but deciding good or bad based on nationality as you are, could be called as bigoted as anything occurring in London or on social media. Get real, you can't equate those silly cunts of 1977 to the mass racist, rampaging, criminality of the England support. Why don't you open your eyes and see. Only when you do that you'll see what everyone else sees๐

Get real, you can't equate those silly cunts of 1977 to the mass racist, rampaging, criminality of the England support. Why don't you open your eyes and see. Only when you do that you'll see what everyone else sees๐ I was a messenger in Soho in 1978 when Scotland came down to play England that May. I saw most of the pubs shut in the West End for the duration of the weekend and most of the shops boarded up their windows. Workers were told to go home early on the Friday. That was in reaction to what had happened in 1977. I wasn't there in 1977 as I was only 15 and didn't work in central London then but people I know who did said it was extremely lively with a lot of pubs and shops trashed, and the general public feeling very threatened. That may not seem much to you but it was sufficiently bad for the reactions of shop owners, busineess and pubs in 1978 that I have just described. I would never claim the England support is perfect but, like all supporter groups, it is a minority that is racist, rampaging or criminal. That's why the booing of the knee was quickly and completely drowned out by cheering. Don't believe the hype rogue - or whatever fantasy you like to believe.

The Clash and their fans are all racists. Everyone who watches England is a rampaging racist criminal ? How many bevvies had you had last night rogueyboy ? You see racism everywhere you look. Hope the hangover is not to bad this morning.
Scottish fans in the 70s were notorious in London. That's why the home internationals were scrapped. Hard to imagine now had hairy it all was back then.

But to make out that what the Scots did wasn't Hooliganism is just denial based on nationality.
