Am I the only person who finds "Football Focus" impossible to watch now that the BC have made it, shall we say, very female orientated? Its the new Uber woke BBC , I was more than amazed recently to discover Gary Lineker is black .Eh ? Really ? Never even considered him looking anything other than Caucasian all these years , so I was slightly baffled to say the least. Its now also player of the match rather than man of the match...........is Manchester to change its name soon .....Personchester . Honestly the world is going insane . I know that as punks here , we would be considered slightly rebellious I guess , but how do punk and wokedom mix ? I was most definitely a punk and took in a lot of its ideas and ideals.....but I am most definitely most anti woke , I have seen this stuff in my workplace and though its supposed to be s form of non discrimination , it is actually very discriminate......positive discrimination is still discrimination. Sorry but I am very uncomfortable with many woke ideals , though I would not consider myself a discriminate person, I also don't like being preached at or tried to be indoctrinated. There’s a lot to unpick there Jon I’ll mull this over and come back to it Anyone?

A few initital thoughts
The word Woke has recently become politicised
Right wing commentators and outlets (eg Daily Mail) use it as part of their ongoing culture wars
Woke seems to have superced Political Correctness as the term of choice to beat progressives over the head with
As I understand it, Woke generally embraces the good stuff....
Equality, equal rights, critical re-examination of Britain's imperial past, etc
I can't get hot under the collar about it
Clearly not everything done in the name of Woke is sane or sensible but I suspect the majority is, at the very least, well intentioned
Manchester becoming People-chester or Manholes becoming People-holes... the Mail et al have been banging that drum for decades now
Positive discrimation? Probably has it's place. Ethnic minorities are clearly denied opportunity (see also disabled, women etc) and initiative to redress the balance have to be a good thing

Personally speaking I would never use it and I'm suspect of people who do because as far as I'm concerned it seems like a bit of a cover for racists and bigots.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with equality and class consciousness which is why a lot of people who the hard right consider 'woke' are in reality just right wing liberals.

Woke - it's a crap term which ranks alongside Remoaners and Lefties. I think I've barely heard anyone use the word vocally, it's more an online term in my experience.
Surely the ethos of 'woke' is empathy, kindness, inclusiveness, equality etc? Why wouldn't you want to have these qualities?
I don't agree with, or use the term. It's an unnecessary label but I'd be amused rather than offended if someone applied it to me.
jonpunk - yes, I hear where you're coming from. It's a shame that some people think that 'woke' needs to be applied in some unnecessary, and frankly wrong scenarios.

If the likes of the Mail, Express are using this term then it doesn't take a genius to see where they're coming from. Their prejudice isn't new, what do we expect from people who supported the Blackshirts?
I've never heard anyone in Glasgow use the word 'woke'. Most working class punters wouldn't know what it is I reckon.
As for 'Manchester', 'Man of the Match' etc. Its all right wing liberalism used by the media.
Absolute stupidity of the highest order. We were watching the Celtic women's football team and the media had a 'man of the match' award as usual even though they were all women. Why not just use 'woman of the match'?
People shouldn't be conned by this media contrived nonsense. Language should always be used in context out of respect.

'Woke' is what the Mail and the Express disparagingly call treating other people with due respect.

'Woke' is what the Mail and the Express disparagingly call treating other people with due respect. And nothing like distraction to stop people thinking about the real issues No dentists Waits of 10 hours at A&E Shit pouring into the sea and our rivers Economy tanking Inflation heading for double digits Energy bills already unaffordable Chumocracy and the billions made during the pandemic Rule breaking and criminality during Covid Russian interference Austerity ruining public services Incompetence Etc etc But no, get people angry about stupid culture wars that just aim to divide rather than unify instead of dealing with the issues created during 12 years of Tory misrule

^ A small price to pay for shareholder value. The real tragedy is that we can't refer to Guy Gibson's dog by his given name

^ A small price to pay for shareholder value. The real tragedy is that we can't refer to Guy Gibson's dog by his given name Again context is everything. That was definitely racist then you have the N-word in Dirty Harry censored when it's used to by a racist psychopath. Two totally different contexts.

I was having some Thomas Tank time with my grandson recently and noted with interest that the 'F** Controller' has been renamed 'Sir Topham Hat', to avoid causing offence to the plus size community.
Fair enough.

True That "You Fat Bastard" chant has bitten the dust Along with "Who Are All The Pies" Calling someone "a bit of salad dodger" or "a lardy arse" was fun too Ah well, a small price to pay for progress

Likewise with 'wee' and 'big'. Also, I hate the way that some people hide behind 'fat shaming' to justify being obscenely overweight. Now, this is entirely up to them but the number of overweight kids going around today is nothing to be proud of.
