Andy used to pop into the old TP Perhaps I should give him a nudge about this place I've got his number somewhere so could send him a message Anyway don't let his possible appearance stop you from being honest about his combo His book.... The Secret Life Of A Teenage Punk Rocker...is a rip roaring read Wish I'd kept it now Outside View

Quite a rare book that, seen prices of £50. Never got round to getting it but he does a twenty minute reading of a few chapters at the end of the 2CD best of Eater set. Loved them, Outside View and Thinking of the USA, two great singles though Get Raped was a bit dodgy. Bought a couple of his solo albums, eccentric affairs. Apparently, there was to be a second book. Not sure if that ever happened. More here: louderthanwar.com/andy-blade-audio-book/

I'm sure we'd have heard if he had written a second book
I'd be interested to read it. As is so often the way with biographies it's the other stuff (school, parents, Islam, travelling to India and becoming a hippy etc) that is as interesting as him spending a night with Nora (to Johnny's chagrin etc) and the nights down the Roxy
I agree about his solo albums. Certainly very different to Eater and maybe an...er... acquired taste
A few TPers went to an Eater reunion gig, or was it billed as Andy? Either way it was Andy and Dee Generate. As I type I realise they were supporting TV Smith doing the whole of Crossing The Red Sea. Anyway it was a good show and great to hear the old Eater classics.

...over the last decade or so, i've got to know Andy Blade, quite well without actually meeting the man. He was going to play a gig with The Lone Sharks in Bristol a few years back, but on the way down, his car got rear shunted on the Motorway, so sadly it was not to be. We have talked about trying to arrange another... but the Pandemic has put an end to that idea for now
I have pretty much all of his solo recordings which are at times, completely bonkers... at others very compelling. I have both pressings of his book too... which is fascinating and funny.
The astonishing thing about Eater is, for such a young band, how good some of their songs were... especially the singles.

Andy is currently looking into getting the second (and unreleased) Eater album released later this year. The mastertapes have been gathering dust since 1978.

Would be interesting to hear that. Who doesn't love a long lost album? He could just put it out on Bandcamp of course

For a bunch of kids still at School... they were better than some bands 5 years older than them. I have the original book and the later bigger book which expands on the former.
This is a later gem from 1978...

I've been listening to the Compleat Eater over the last few days
There's a few gems in there but a lot of it is not as good as I had remembered.
Much of it sounds really poorly produced. Or perhaps it's the remastering? Dunno.
Either way, and lawd knows I'm no audiophile, quite a bit of it sounds, even to my unsophisticated ear, a bit rubbish

Unlike most other Punk bands, Eater's records tended to have the guitar mixed down really low with minimal distortion... (no Fuzz pedal?) i guess that must have been down to Dave Goodman... the first time i heard 'The Album' i was really struck by how weird it sounded, compared to The Clash, Pistols, Buzzcocks etc... but i think that's part of it's unique charm.

Thanks Andy. I'm still enjoying quite a bit of it but the sound is a bit distracting. I'll try and reframe it as "unique charm"

Anyway it was a good show and great to hear the old Eater classics. The gig was at the 100 Club and it was my first TP "meet". We were well represented on the night by a dozen or more of the TP posse at the gig. I was distinctly unimpressed by TV Smith, still wearing the "punkified" old school blazer and coming out with his rather sad "It's just like 1977 all over again !" stage patter. Eater were much better than I'd expected, racing through a punky set with a lot of enthusiasm. Andy Blade chatted with a number of TP folk after the gig and came across as a pretty nice guy.
