You called that one wrong Very prosperous. Full of yer metrosexuals and liberal elite now. Probably go Labour at the next election. Loads going on there - craft pubs, new restaurants etc The local team got promotion (into National League South) last season Got to be better than the IOM I'd have said "going Labour" was a reflection of the urban decay, but given that I haven't set foot in the place for over a decade I'll take your word for it. But I can't see it comparing to the island – the Brighton/Shoreham/Worthing conurbation is one of the most densely populated in the UK, whereas the island has a very low population density (unlike most offshore centres) and plenty of unspoilt countryside.

A hypothetical example of somewhere with a lower tax rate... thanks for confirming Nigey's suspicions regarding your motivation, though. As for my motivations: reducing my tax bill obviously played a huge part

^ Some of the other (US) forums I post on offer a bewildering and ever-expanding array of emoticons, and some of the republicans I debate with make you look like Diane Abbott

For them, the debate isn't about how much tax they should be paying to fund public services or how that tax should be spent; they seriously advance arguments like "Why should I spend any money to keep people I don't know alive?" I've actually seen that one verbatim in a forum.

Poli has a black friend... albeit one who moved to the island cos he can't stand blacks. He does something in finance so presumably dodging tax was probably another factor in his decision.

You're right about live music, though: whilst the island has a lively rock and folk scene, gigs by interesting visiting artists are few and far between due to the cost of getting gear over here. Otherwise you're way off the mark, as the Isle of Man has far more of a sense of community and much more interesting people than I ever encountered in Sussex. It also has an almost complete absence of serious crime, very little social unrest and a relaxed and appealing way of life.

I'm sure it's a nice place with plenty to recommend it but 24/7 probably not for me
Glad you're so contented though - and all that extra cash too

I'm sure it's a nice place with plenty to recommend it but 24/7 probably not for me Yes, a friend who lives in Brighton and regularly visits the island says exactly the same thing. The culture here is more Irish than English, both for better (it's very friendly and informal) and worse (getting anything done in a hurry is virtually impossible – getting a contractor do a relatively small job can take literally years). It's certainly made me more mellow and relaxed. He's quite an impatient and tense person and I think the lack of efficiency would sooner or later cause him to explode with rage.

Sounds far from ideal, especially if you've got a domestic emergency to deal with

I'm sure it's a nice place with plenty to recommend it In addition to tax-dodging, the island is famous for its attempts to perpetuate corporal punishment, suppress LGBT rights, and the Summerland tragedy.

Sounds far from ideal, especially if you've got a domestic emergency to deal with Emergency stuff you can get done – I had a minor leak from a water tank reported to me on Tuesday and my plumber was round the same evening to inspect it; the tank was drained and the new part fitted yesterday. It's the "elective" stuff that's difficult: I'd like to have some more custom shelving built for my record collection. Can I find a reliable, competent joiner to do it? I'd have more chance of finding a teenage virgin in Peel. (Joke that won't make sense to anyone who doesn't live on the island.)
