There's so much to love about The Adverts Formed in late 76, and one of the first bands to be formed outside the London scene Their first gigs were at The Roxy Club, and within a few months they'd released a single and were supporting The Damned Great tunes & sharp lyrics meant they were an early punk entry into the UK singles chart (in August 77) with Gary Gilmore Eyes Sadly the momentum was not to continue. Their label went bust and the group ended up on RCA and, after that difficult second album, RCA lost interest and The Adverts finally called it a day on 27 October 1979.
A great punk band who made three classic singles and a stunning debut album What's the TP verdict?

How do you follow up Crossing The Red Sea? Taken in isolation, Cast of Thousands is a good solid album, opening title track to the closing I will Walk You Home. You can hear future ventures Cheap, The Explorers and Channel 5 in there.
And what a nice bloke Mr Smith is too.

Love them and TV Smith is one of the handful of original punks who hasn't became a rabid right winger.
Gaye Advert too. Another down to earth person.
The Adverts as well as making great music seem like genuine people.
One of the best bands ever.

TV Smith is one of the handful of original punks who hasn't became a rabid right winger Is that correct? Not doubting TV Smith's credentials, and I know Rotten must now forever remain on the naughty step, but, a few names off the top of my head, are... Paul Cook, Steve Jones, Mark Perry, Adam Ant, Mick Jones, Casino Steel, Patrik Fitzgerald, Steve Diggle, Paul Simonon, Viv Albertine, Topper Headon, Dave Vanian, Palm Olive, Brian Jones, Mensi, Captain Sensible, Rat Scabies, Beki Bondage, Knox, Vic Godard, Marco Perroni, Jordan, Nick Cash, Colin Newman, Pauline Murrary, Keith Levine, Siouxsie, Johnny Moped, Manic Esso, Arturo Bassik, Kevin Rowland, Andy Blade, Howard Wall, Steve Ignorant, Tony James, Gene October, Jimmy Pursey, Wreckless Eric, Mick Rossi etc etc ...rabid right wingers? I'd be interested to know, and I know you're much more clued up about such things, but I'd assumed they, and many others I've not cited, are from being rabid right wingers Anyway, back to The Adverts - I was just enjoying and loving this... The Adverts We Who Wait

^ TV Smith was / is a great lyricist. "Gary Gilmore's Eyes" is a real stand out, and the first elpee is a punk classic. Never followed Smith's trajectory after the Adverts packed in, did he make any good solo stuff?

The only way to avoid becoming a nazi was to hold off joining the punk rock movement until it had become a joke, apparently

Never followed Smith's trajectory after the Adverts packed in, did he make any good solo stuff? He did a pretty good solo acoustic act. My band opened for him at a local show in a while back and I chatted to him for a bit. He said he did 150+ shows a year all over Europe. Nice bloke, too, very articulate and 'right on' politically. Not sure if he's still active, I guess not at the moment, like working musicians in general.

I've put him on a couple of times, he's very professional in his approach to gigging. There was a BBC4 doc a few years back showing his life on the road (rails actually), a modern day Woody Guthrie.
I would recommend Generation Y or In The Arms Of My Enemy as albums to 'get into him'.

The Adverts are a rather special band for me, because on the 22nd September 1977, as a naive young spotty oik with long hair, i finally summoned up the courage to buy my first Punk Rock record, "Gary Gilmore's Eyes" - Such was the animosity towards Punk at the time, i remember thinking that by doing this, i might be made homeless or maybe banished to the garden shed... either way, a line had been crossed.
TV Smith's lyrics have always been a cut above the average, through out his long career. About 10 years ago i found out about his college band Sleaze that played a few gigs in Devon around 1975, before he read about Punk, and moved to London to form a new band.
Here is a song from Sleaze, that's going to sound strangely familiar if you are an Adverts fan...

The Adverts We Who WaitWell that depends on your point of view doesn't it? Now theres some people in that list who definitely aren't right wing. I take it you can vouch for the political views of all the people on there? It's what constitutes right wing to decent people though isn't it? I mean considering you vote for a party that contains a large percentage of anti semites and people who start illegal wars in countries recognised as legitimate governments under international law, you would be the last person who could define the parameters of what constitutes being 'right wing'is and what doesn't.

I think that cartoon would be better aimed at the majority of white people and your fellow countrymen and their treatment of aboriginal people. Talking about firing a gun loaded with blanks. Still it's better to mock anti racism isn't it?

Now theres some people in that list who definitely aren't right wing. I take it you can vouch for the political views of all the people on there? I can't vouch for anyone on that list I was just querying your statement that... TV Smith is one of the handful of original punks who hasn't became a rabid right winger Your assertion suggested you knew for a fact that the vast majority of first gen punks are rabid right wingers, hence my query You don't know. Fair enough. Let's move on, and get back to The Adverts
