As I couldn't be arsed going to see Blondie and Johnny Marr at the Arena tonight it'll probably be Nick Mason's Saucerful of Secrets at Manchester Apollo on Friday. If not that it'll be Dead Kennedys the Wednesday after that. The Dead Kennedys are here next year.

Mixed feelings about the Scotland Calling gig. Is it really worth attending these events to see old people trying to recapture their youth? There were so many people with sticks I thought I was in Sherwood Forest. Add that to a sprinkling of mobility scooters and even a few zimmers and I felt like running(yes one of the few who could probably still do so)to the Brazen Head(which I did). As for the music?Firstly, there was a horrible 'uniformity of sound so all the bands had the same sterile 'big venue' racket blasting out the speakers. No individuality or distinctiveness. The Subs were the Subs. The ANWL were and are a dated joke and Steve Ignorant was just going through the motions with the exception of Carol Hodge who was brilliantly demonstrative. As for the Rezillos? That unique sound of theirs was lost in the hollow sterility of 'the mix'. And fresh from drinking safely in the cradle of British Unionism on the Paisley Rd in the arch loyalist watering hole 'The Union', the Cockney Rejects gave a bizarre performance of shadow boxing to a dull sound of 'pure punk rawk' with Stinky sounding as if he'd a quick blast of helium before going on stage. Truely awful. As for the Skids? At this point myself and my pal's had adjourned back to the Brazen Head to get a decent pint. The party's over folks👍 You've hit the nail on the head with this review mate. I've been trying to work out why I've come away from seeing bands in big venues, and feeling that the night has been a bit of an anti-climax, despite my initial optimism. It's not been the bands, but the overall sound. Spot on. There's plenty of up and coming bands and venues to see live music.

The biggest Punk Event i have been to, to date was Rebellion Festival Blackpool 2018. I had been to the first couple of these from 1996 to 99 when it was alot smaller... but then i took a 19 year break due to the volatility of my work situation.
This Festival is loved by many... and hated by a minority... it's funny reading online comments from people slating it, that have never even been to it. I went in 2018 because an old friend mine from Melbourne was playing there with his band for the first time... ever. We hadn't seen each other since i was in Australia in 1988. TalkPunk Veterans Blitzkrieg Bob, Ger 01, Billy from Scotland, Min from Australia were also there that year, so it was great to meet up with them.
Contrary to what Keyboard grumpies might say, Rebellion gives the opportunity to alot of new bands from all over the globe, to play to a new audience. There are stages and rooms of varying sizes... acoustic rooms, art rooms... all kinds of things to checkout ...over four days, it's exhausting on the old legs though.
I do love small Pub and Club gigs, they are generally my preference... 'Small Is Beautiful' but every once in a while, it's good to get out of your comfort zone. I went to see The Pistols gig at Finsbury Park along with 30,000 other people, not knowing what to expect, but i loved it.

Being indoors with a large crowd over a protracted period is my idea of hell. I'm glad that Rebellion exists, it just ain't for me.

This summer season my shop is sponsoring (along with others) the Sound of Scarborough series of gigs in the town. From folk harpists to black metal growlers, everyone catered for. Venues in pubs, clubs, open air in the beautiful Italian Gardens and one afternoon on a ship in the harbour. Really looking forward to this. I'll post links as soon as the line ups and dates are finalized.

It's 'punk' by numbers in the most cynical way. Coming through the DIY punk scene in the 80's, it's never what it was about. Same old songs with the same pre-set 'stage show'...over and over again. These type of gigs lack vitality. One of the most important ingredients of a punk gig I reckon.

I've never been to Rebellion and I've always said that I'd never comment on it until I did. I suppose there would be a similar aspect to these 'Calling' gigs insofar a lot of these old bands would be playing the same old sets. However, there obviously seems a lot more choice so I would have to attend to give it my considered opinion. You're 100% right about meeting people. It's probably better than some of he music. However, I think 'Wonkfest' seems a lot more attractive, a lot more contemporary.👍

For me, it was never about these large scale events for aging rock stars either. A lot of bands seem like parodies of themselves. For example, I saw the Subhumans a few years ago and musically they were dreadful. They just couldn't cut it anymore. Now, in their heyday, very few could touch them live. I suppose the passage of time finds us all out eventually to some degree.😕

They do but either the sound has been terrible or Dick's voice has been shot. Mind you having seen them at the time of 'Evolution' with the likes of Toxic Reasons and doing 'World's Apart' live....what could possibly compare to such brilliance?🤔

Saw the Dub Pistols yesterday afternoon headlining a local festival
As brilliant as ever
Ultimate festival experience
They've added a fun version of Bank Robber to the set

Might do PIL a week today and Pixies in early July.
Nothing much going on apart from tribute gigs at the pub down the road.

Boomtown again for me in August. I'll be giving the bands a wide berth and having it out to drum & bass
