Originally a Deep Purple covers band in Belfast called Highway Star That all changed when journalist Gordon Ogilvie instigated a radical makeover Named after a Vibrators song their sound was raw and uncompromising Their first two singles and debut album are as good as any from the first wave
45 rpm
Suspect Device / Wasted Life (1978 Rough Trade) Alternative Ulster / 78 Revolutions A Minute (1978 Rough Trade)
33 rpm
Inflammable Material Favourite tracks: Johnny Was + Wasted Life
What's the TP verdict?

Loved their early stuff, then began to lose interest as they mellowed out.Think I need to go back & listen to their more power pop based songs & see what I think to them now.

Loved them up to'Go For It' but after that...
Jake Burns has to be the best punk vocalist ever👍

Never really got into the them, but they stepped up to the plate when Sham bottled out of closing the 2nd big RAR in Brockwell Park.
I'm somewhere in the first 3 or 4 rows of the crowd in this clip, getting rocked senseless by the Fingers.

Enthusiastic first few rows Zeo
You must have been sweaty by the end
I well remember coming out of gigs dripping with sweat (and later clubs) - those were the days eh?

I learnt how to play in a band, when me and some friends formed a band called The Rigid Midget Digits playing mostly songs from their first two albums. We were pretty rubbish to start off with but, starting from scratch, kept rehearsing regularly and got really good. We recorded 4 SLF songs "Gotta Getaway" "Wasted Life" "Barbed Wire Love" and "Alternative Ulster" But eventually i wanted to move on and play original songs, which is ALOT more challenging as many punters just want to hear songs they know... but is ALOT more rewarding when get a positive response.

My favourite Fingers song is 'State of Emergency' which contains some of his most incendiary vocals(and powerchords).
Truthfully, though he's good on all of them. I can't think of many punk vocalists who come close and there are a lot of really good ones.
Jello maybe?

I've started relistening to the 'No Going Back' album which I didn't care much for at the time when it was released in 2015.
Never be as good as the early stuff but well worth a listen.

It has some good lyrical themes too but lacks the urgency of the earlier material.
Still a good listen though.

They have inevitably mellowed somewhat from their days as frustrated angry teenagers, but that is a good album.
'My Dark Places' is a song i can relate to. The Last time i saw them was about 3 years ago and Jake Burns' vocals were as powerful and passionate as ever.

Aye,I think a lot of people expect the same level of intensity but the world has moved on since SLF's heyday.
They can still write a good tune so I suppose you have to be in the right frame of mind to appreciate it.
