Hooky could be Regional Manager now if he'd played his cards right I'm not saying he should have completely abandoned the music business. He could have applied for a position in the hi-fi dept. at Rumbelows, for example. He's be more of a Richer Sounds guy

So you keep saying. I'm not sure why though In that case I'll be happy to elaborate: If, after Curtis' passing, they'd had the good grace to sell their instruments and go to work in shops i might have a shred of respect for them. Instead they used it as an opportunity to peddle a load of insipid, pretentious, vacuous pap, thereby tarnishing the legacy of the great artist with whom they'd had the privilege to work. As a discerning listener I cannot, and frankly, will not accept this worthless group under any circumstances. 👍👌🤣

Even I will concede that new single Be a Rebel does not sound all that
Very 90s sounding and reminiscent of Electronic
Then again, it is new New Order and, unlike many here, that makes me happy

That dreadful version of 'Blue Monday' that they insisted on playing 'live' on TOTP shows you how talentless NO were without their gimmicks in a studio.
Utterly devoid of talent.
It makes you think.. how much were they faking it?

Were they?
Where'd you read that?
They couldn't play.
Let's be honest..was this the revolutionary dance track it became?
It was obviously doctored.

I can't remember now but it's a pretty well known story. Barney was off his head
It was also their decision to play live
You probably know TOTP required every artist to rerecord their track for the show whilst an MU person looked on. At a crucial moment the recorded tape would be switched with the actual single recording. Everyone knew this went on.
Wilful types like New Order couldn't be bothered with such shenanigans and just played live.
Most of their TOTP performances sound terrible because the show was geared up to live music.
The other issue that is well documented is that, as this was the early days of a lot of the technology they were using, the equipment was really unreliable, and the synths regularly went awry.
I've seen both New Order and Joy Division and can confirm they can play. The issues arose when the equipment failed and when their was too much drug taking
When you say the track was doctored do you mean it was well produced in a studio? Er, yeah. Of course.

Really?
What an elaborate revisionist tale!🤣
Why don't you just admit it that they just can't play?
When you were paying your £100+ to see these jokers how do you not know it wasn't just backing tapes too?
Morris is and was a great drummer but they had him stuck behind a Casio piano half the time and like always he did what he was told as Sumner and Hook bickered about who was the leader of the band.
That numpty Hook can't even play bass and sing at the same time even after all these years.
What a fraud.

£100? What are you talking about?
And what's the obsession with whether they can play?
Who cares? Could Crass and that lot play?
I'd rather dance to New Order in a club than see them play live anyway, though did enjoy the odd gig back in the 80s and early 90s and thought they were fine. Just the same as when they were Joy Division, who I saw a couple of times too.

Judge for yourself folks. The legendary NO! A lot better than I'd remembered actually I may be getting confused with Fine Time or another one when I said Barney was off his head Definitely had technical synth problems though, Steve picks up the tale... It was the only time in the show's history that a band appeared on the show and the single went down in the chart the following week. Foolishly, we insisted we would go on only if we could perform live. So they had to inspect everything and put "BBC approved" stickers on our plugs. All the other bands were telling us how they'd always wanted to do it live, but we made a complete balls of it. Blue Monday [1983] was never the easiest song to perform, anyway, and everything went wrong. The synthesisers went awry. It sounded awful. When we did Thieves Like Us, I remember hearing the camera crew going, "Oh my God, this lot don't move a muscle and the bassist's chewing gum!" I suppose we were trying to rebel. I think everyone harbours a secret fantasy of going on with a loaded machine gun and taking half the audience down.

And here's another live TOTP performance (they never learn do they?) and this is the one when Barney is off his head...

I personally think Crass played well enough but then again they were a multi media group. What that video proves that despite their allusions they were never good enough to pull their own pretentious pap off.

It's a simple enough question. How much would you pay to see them? I thought you were suggesting I'd paid £100 to go and see them I've got no interest in seeing them live now.
Saw them a few times back in the day. Standard gig prices for medium sized venues. Couldn't tell you know much now. I've seen Peter Hook and the Light in the last few years - that was about £20 I personally think Crass played well enough... Well enough? Either way, I am baffled by your obsession with musical ability. Who cares if the end result is interesting? I'd rather see energy and ambition than a virtuoso going through their paces What that video proves that despite their allusions they were never good enough to pull their own pretentious pap off. The vid proves that their ambition was sometimes greater than their ability and/or the technology. So what? It also proves they were brave and reckless, and preferred to make life difficult for themselves than just mime to a backing track like 95% of TOTP groups I applaud that attitude
Why don't you just ignore them? And this thread, as you've got such a downer on them
